my 1997 dodge dakota 5.2 318 started with a little bit of a problem but i was able to drive it.i went into sears to get a screw driver for my phone to put a new cover on and i came back out and i went to start my truck. i statrted it and it wouldnt even go over 1000 rpm when i went to step on the gas it wanted to die. i thought it was the spark plugs and i put new ones in and now itll sound like it wants to turn over but i wont start i was told that it could be my fuel filter or the whole unit for the spark plugs i dont know what it is but if it started then wanted to die i dont think its the spark plug units( i forget what its called ) i hope you can help me thatnks

it could be a clogged fuel injectors, try using some good fuel system cleaner.

Kyle: I'm no mechanic but it sounds like a bad fuel pump(judging by what you said about having to hit the gas tank). One question for you: has your gas gauge ever acted funny? i.e. bouncing around, showing empty all the time? I had a 95 dak that had both problems, and after changing the fuel pump/gas guage sending unit (it's all one part) the truck ran great. A dirty fuel filter could be also the problem. Hope this helps.
