I have another related tow question. My 04 Dakota has a tranny cooler and the 7 prong harness, but for the life of my I can't find the brake controller wiring under the dash. Am I an idiot, or does anyone have any suggestions as to where it should be? Is it possible that it is not there? If so how difficult would it be to wire it in?

By stabilizer bars, do you mean on a weight distributing hitch ? Generally, they come with two equalizer bars, to aid in distributing the weight; and often one stabilizer bar, to help control sway (the bar that mounts higher up). If so, you'll be fine. I've towed close to that with no trouble with a regular ball hitch, just by making sure it had decent tongue weight. And a good bit more with a fifth wheel hitch. Just don't be afraid to let the motor rev going up hills.

thanks,Kowalski and yes it is a wight distributing hitch, when you said no problems does that mean the engine can handle it or is it a slow bogged down ride?

That's why I said don't be afraid to let it rev going up hills. It will handle it fine. Just allow it to downshift and rev as it wants to.

"DO Not Do It" - Bull. You just like to bash people; otherwise - why not use your usual screen name ? My 9 year old 4.7 still runs great.

As a follow up I have towed heavy loads in overdrive many times and at 75K miles my Dakota is still going strong. It is a 4.7 AWD with the factory tow package including rear oil cooler.

The heaviest load so far is a 4000 pound Kubota B21 backhoe that I bought out of state and towed for over 4 hours home on a 3000 pound equipment trailer with brakes. I had no problem towing at interstate speeds.

This weekend I am planning to move a MF50 farm tractor, a disc harrow, a 5' bush hog and a box blade 60 miles in two trips on a 3000 pound equipment trailer in two trips.

Here is a pic of the B21 after towing
