Subject: tires/dual exh vs comp prob in '93 5.2L
IP: Logged

Message:
In my previous post, I failed to mention that the vehicle in question ('93 Dakota, 5.2L, auto, 4x4) has 31" tires (somewhat taller than stock) and home-made dual exhaust (with 02 sensor on one side only). Can anyone confirm whether these mods could have screwed up my computer? Or tell me how to find out? I don't think my problem showed up 'til much later, but I'm trying to put all the pertinent info out there. Thanks everyone!
Ben

31895dak, thanks for your reply.
no, the 31x10.50R15 tires do not rub, BUT, i didn't install them until after I already had installed a home-made body lift and tweaked the torsion bars a little (key word: little! go too far and your alignment gets screwed up!).
as for the body lift, it wasn't until after we had removed all the body bolts that we discovered that the cab was bolted down with standard-threaded bolts, but the bed was bolted with metric! or maybe, it was the other way around. bottom line, when your truck is apart in your hillbilly friend's barn is a bad time to go looking for long metric bolts!
i really do appreciate your opinion on the oversize tires and home-made dual exhaust (made in the same hillbilly garage) not interfering with the computer. that's my gut feeling too, but i have no hard data or experience to base it on. do you?

Cool. I'm planning on trying the ol' O2 sensors in one side trick myself for my Dakota and my bro in laws 318 Ram as well. He's almost thinking of using a H pipe between his exhausts and running his sensors there. I'm not so sure I want to do that.
One bank should still give the same reading as reading both together.

I put true duals on my 93 5.2 and of course had no choice but run only 1 O2 sensor. Ran just fine. Never a problem in 8 yrs. Ben you mentioned he was using a programmer to check the codes. That truck has on board diagnostics. Why not see what it tells you. If you cycle the key on off on off and on in 5 seconds watch the service engine light for flashes. In other words on the 3rd on leave the key on. It will flash out fault codes if there are any. For example 1 flash hesitation 2 flashes is code 12, 2 flashes hesitation 3 flashes is code 23, etc. It will finish with 5 flashes, hesitation 5 flashes which is 55 and means it's done. Do this and see what it says and e-mail me at kb9vxq@arrl.net with the codes and I'll look them up in my manual and tell you what they mean.

i have a 93 dakota, extended cab 318 4x4. i put 31x10.50xr15's on my stock rims. it doesnt rub at all. it does come close though, but it will never ever rub. i think if i cranked the torsion bars a little bit i could stuff 33x10.50.r15's on it maybe.
