I have a 2004 Dakota QC ,4x4 ,4.7 ,Homebrew CAI,3.55,flowmaster 40 series 2.5" exhaust,33" tires. I was wondering what I would see the greatest performance benifit from 3.92gears or Krc 200 cams I have about $400 to play with I am an ASE certified Tech so I would be doing this myself. I know that the 3.92's would return my truck to just about stock, witch was acceptable, my truck came with tiny 245/70/16, when I put my 33" on ,it gutted my truck's performance more so than I thought it would. Thanks for any advice

If you only have 400, you wont be able to get the gears. I am pretty sure gears for a 4x4 will run you about 600 just for parts.

I put larger tires on my truck, and I am gonna change the gears as soon as it warms up a little so I can ride the bike while the truck is down.

Anyways, I would do the gears if I were you. The cam may give you more power, but the gears should help your milage a little.

My opinion is gears, and I would go for 4.10's at least, unless you are trying to use stock parts.

I just changed my 3.55 ring and pinion to 4.10 - It sure woke up my truck - Even with my supercharger I wish I had changed the gears earlier.

I think a gear swap would be best. I swapped out my 3.55's for 4.10's in my 03 4.7 4x4 auto. I have the 265/70r16's and i think the 4.10's are the perfect gear for them. If you have an auto i would go 4.56's or 4.10's if you have a manual transmision.

my vote is both but i would do the gears first. android287 you said 4.56 for the auto why didnt you get them with your auto? how bad do you think rpms at 70mph with 4.56? what are your rpms on your 4.10's. where is the best place to buy the gears? and whats a fair not cheap but fair price to pay someone to install them?

I think he's recommending 4.56's because of the HUGE 33" tires!

I'll be swapping my gears hopefully this summer doing them myself.

I figured around $500 to $600 and I think that INCLUDED going with a LSD diff and the install kit. It's the LABOR that costs so much.

Thank You for the advice. Where can I get 4.56 gears for the front. I have talked to Richmond,Auburn, and Motive gear and they tell me all I can get for the front is 3.92 because ,they are factory. I would love to go 4.56's. My engine seems weak on the low end and likes R's so 4.56's would may me happy

Im think of going 4.10 with my 3.7 5spd. Just wondering do I need to get a new bearing install kit when i put the gears or Auburn LSD in it? I only have 5500 miles on it. Im modded it so I need the LSD badly, cant run much with my peg leg spinning all the time.

If you change your diff to a lsd, you will need an install kit, but you can get away with the partial, and not a master install kit. The miles aren't what matter, it is if you need different shims to make the new gears fit right.
