I would not do it. Some have, and it is correct that a set of LA covers will bolt on, but leaking is a common problem. You have to use RTV to seal the covers around the other 5 bolt holes that are not used.

Like Sneezer said, they will bolt up, but you will most likely have leaks at some point in time.

Use the nice fat valve cover seals like the OEMs on late model Magnums. They're the wide, re-usable ones. The LA 5-bolt pattern is a subset of the Magnum 10-bolt set. They seal fine.

Do that and you lose the benifit of the 10 bolts! Why not just spend the extra cash and do it right the first time? Some people have to learn for themselves, I suppose.

Hmmm, let me see. A $5 Mr. Gasket set of hold down tabs to spread the clamping force of the bolts (pkg of 8 at Summit), or an extra $60-$100 bucks for those extra holes.....

Well, I think you'll need two paks...
It's still Mickey Mouse, no matter how you justify it. There is a reason that the magnums use ten bolts...you just don't get it, that's all.
Here's a solutions that you'd like: just drill the old school covers out for the new pattern. How's that for cheap skate, backwoods, red-neck, shade tree, ol' skool?

The reason for 10 bolts, dickhead, is so they can have better sealing with wimpy (you know the type), thin sheetmetal valve covers. Mopar initially stated the Magnum heads couldn't even be used on LA blocks. Now, since everyone is doing it (well, except someone like you JonWay), Mopar sells retrofit kits to do the very thing they'd said couldn't be done. Are we learning?

Math lesson. One pkg of 8 tabs. You only need 2 because the only real leak issue is on the bottom. Obviously, JonWay, you've never seen an LA valve cover. One tab on the bottom middle bolt. But then, real men use strong, rigid valve covers, not the wimpy sheetmetal ones, so this really isn't an issue. Old school? There's no school like the old school.....young fool.

Hey, JonWay, is your screen name a reflection of something it took you all night to think up, or is it just another way of saying "flush the toilet"? I think it's the latter, since the content of your last post is roughly equal to what is usually flushed in said toilet. Now go hump somebody else's leg, muttface.

Give JonWay a break. Not everyone was born in the pre-Mag era.

If you can pick up the pre-Mag valve covers cheap, go for it. You might be able to find some nice ones on eBay.

My next question is; will the oil pan from a early 360 fit a magnum. I have a cousin with a chrome one for sale and was hoping it would fit. Should I use those clamp things on there too? Oh, yeah, are the timing covers the same too?

You don't have to be born in a particular era to be educated about it. It's a nearly lost concept called "READING".

"Give JonWay a break. Not everyone was born in the pre-Mag era." Sounds like he needs to keep uninformed opinions to himself, since you seem to agree that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

It would seem JonWay needs the deep breath. Everything was fine til he popped off.
"How's that for cheap skate, backwoods, red-neck, shade tree, ol' skool?" I respond to this, and now I'm accused of assuming the moderator's role? I'm the bad guy here??? Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'. Get over it. Is is sweet to see his girlfriends come to his aid, however.

If you have the rigid aluminum valve covers, you'll see little improvement in sealing. If it's the easy-to-bend sheet metal valve covers, use the clamps. As for the oil pan, no clamps are needed.

The oil pan will fit. They have the same bolt pattern. Just remember to use the 360LA oil pan gaskets. The front and rear rubber seals are slightly different. Now, will it fit your chassis? Front sump? Rear sump?

Same deal applies with the timing cover. The bolt pattern is the same. But, what are you gonna do? There's a little more internal clearance with an LA timing cover. The Magnum cams are .3" shorter. There's the chance that using a Magnum timing cover on an LA will cause cam interference, but so far I haven't seen this. Basically, a Magnum cover on an LA is tighter clearance, LA cover on a Magnum offers more clearance. Also, if you plan on using a mechanical, engine-driven fuel pump, you must have the LA cover, since it has the opening for the fuel pump. Swapping these covers does not affect the alignment of the front oil pan seal.
Also remember that the water pump and fan on a Magnum rotate opposite of the LA's due to the serpentine belt drive. You need to consider this when doing those pieces. Either use the V-belt LA pulleys and accessory drives, or the Magnum. You can't mix. You can, however get aftermarket serpentine drive pulleys for LA's through March Performance: http://www.marchperf.com/
If you have the Magnum pieces, use them. The water pump will bolt to the timing cover just like the LA.

#1 reason for the cheap stamped steel covers leaking ? People overtightening the bolts, leaving a pucker in between. I doubt there's many problems with the old LA cast aluminum type, mine seal well.
