Message:
Hello,

Has anyone dealt with the ticking sound on the 318's. I have no leaks on my exaust manifolds, Their is no noise when its cold but as soon as its been running for awhile i get the ticking noise on the drivers side. It has just recently started. Any advice would be great...I have already looked at the posts on this subject but its still no clear what it could be.

I have a 99' and it would also do it. I don't know the name of it, but there is an (I think?) emission part that is mounted on the firewall. It is mounted to the right of the TB.

listen with a hose or stethoscope to isolate where it's coming from.
pull the valve cover.
check that your rockers are torqued to 21ftlbs.
to tight or loose will cause ticking.

if that don't do it pull the rods from the noise area and check they are'nt bent by rolling on something flat like glass.

you can try swapping those rods with ones from a quiet area and see if the sound moves..

while your doing that look at the springs/retainers/rocker arm cups for anything obvious.

also exhaust manifold gasket leaks sound like ticking, use a rubber hose to listen for that.

could be a lifter..but rule out the easy stuff first.

OBIO3 where the hell have you been for the last two years. I have been chasing that problem forever. I've replaced the plug wires, dist cap, injectors, and had it checked by two separate mechanics . Nobody could find anything and I seemed to be the only one who could hear it. If this fixes the problem, you'll be my best friend. What does this valve look like and what is it hooked to? IE, what does it purge? Any additional info would be helpful.

Guys the sound i'm hearing is not from the purge valve. I know that sound, It sounds like a sewing machine running. The sound i'm getting is a Tick Tick Tick sound and it only happens as soon as it gets to operating temp. I removed the valve cover and i could not isolate the problem, Also re-torqued the bolts on my hedders and collectors, it was no help. the sound speeds up when you increase RPM...I'll post some news if i find anything
