Subject: 180 thermostat or lower?

i read if you go below 180 thermostat you could get oil sludge. is this true? i have a 4.7 and want to eleminate my engine driven fan for more power. if i remove my clutch fan if i put in a 180 thermo will the electric fan suffice?

Try it. It won't cost you anything. Just make sure to monitor your temps, though.

Your oil will run at about 200-230 in the summer with a 180 stat, anything above 185 oil temp is ok .If it gets below zero where you live put the 195 back in in the winter.

There's no question that it will work...(even with the A/C on), but we tried that out here and it works fine in the winter but started running too hot in the summer on two different '01 5.9L models. You can wire in a switch to the electric fan and keep it on even with the A/C off.

I put in a thermostatic switch and set it to turn the fan on just after the thermostat opens. Works pretty good but it hasn't been above 70°F here yet.
