Subject: 4.7 or 5.7?
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok next month I'm finally gonna have money to sink into my '98 dakota and I really want to replace the 318 I've got now so I'm looking for opinions on whether I should go to a 4.7 or 5.7? pros and cons everyone, they would be helpful.

I'm leaning towards the 4.7 due to the performace/gas consumption ratio but I really like the power of the 5.7s in the Ram.

BTW...I'm not concerned about price/time/etc. Just looking towards the end result and how they compare.

Thanks

-Eric

goin from a 318 to a 4.7 wont yield u much especially if its not automatic. and the 5.7 will not be an easy task to get into the dakota. try a 5.9 and maybe stroke it to a 408 if u wanna go all out

yeah that is a hard one. i had to deside last year i ended up goin with the dakota becouse i just didnt want a full size. i dont need a fullsize for my around the house stuff. the ram is really big for what i need it for ive got a fullsize work truck for my other stuff. when i was shopping for a truck there really wasnt much differance in price from the ram 5.7 and dak 4.7 good luck

Well let me get a bit more in depth...I'm retiring my truck from daily driving in a month or 2, probably gonna make it a show truck so what I'm looking for is wow factor. I thought about rebuilding my 318 but IMO that engine is a bit too old and underpowered and I'd end up spending almost as much as a complete engine working it up to the performance level I want. The 5.9 is another thing I've been thinking of but I still would like to spend the money and get the new technology out of the 4.7 or 5.7...

BTW...I'm pushing for about 350-400hp at the rear wheel, pretty doable with my choices depending on adding CAI, power chip, high flow exhaust, reprogramming, etc...but with the 5.2 or 5.9 I'd probably bore them out and around my area its hard to find a shop that does good work.
