Subject: Leak between engine and transmission
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi,

I have a leak where my engine and transmission meets particularly on the bottom of the structural cover. The fluid that is leaking is definitely transmission fluid. It is a 2000 Dakota with a little over 60K miles on it with a 4.7L V8 and 45RFE transmission.

The engine runs perfect and the transmission shifts fine but this leak seems to be getting worse. I have pictures of it below.

Any ideas what could be causing this leak and what to do to fix it?

Thanks

thomas, the fluid looks like it is engine oil or very dirty trans fluid. could either be a leaking rear main seal or a leaking torque converter seal and or oil pump oring and gasket. both of which I have seen before.my advice would be to put some dye in engine oil and recheck it in about a week or so driving.let me know what it turns out to be.

It seems like all oil leaks end up there. Has to do with angle of the engine, wind direction, gravity, etc. Anyway, just because that's where you see the oil doesn't mean that's where it came from. I would say leaking valve covers are the most common cause, but could also be intake manifold, oil pan, or even front cover.

Sometimes tracking it down can be difficult. So go over every inch of the engine and take a very close look at any place that might possibly leak oil. Don't forget the center of the balancer.

Once you think you've got it figured out, do a simple test to prove it. Clean the engine really well with a good degreaser and a pressure washer. Let the engine sit for a day (or whatever) until it is completly dry. Do not run the engine while it's drying.

Now sprinkle a little corn starch around the area where you think the leak is coming from. Now run the engine. When the oil starts leaking, the corn starch will change color.

Looks like that could be oil or really dirty tranny fluid. I was having a similar leak recently, there was tranny fluid on the bottom of the bellhousing. I figured the front seal of the tranny was leaking so I took the whole son of a bitch out (took an entire day) replace the seal, drove it around, and the son of a biznatch still leaks tranny fluid. I was pissed.

Furthermore, it is also leaking a little bit of coolant down there as well now, which is even more confusing. Neither one is a big deal but it's still annoying.

Oh, BTW, good luck figuring out what's leaking.

Well I was taking a closer look at the leak today when I realized that one of the bolts for the structural cover could be turned by hand. Well I took my torque wrench out there and checked all the bolts for the cover and a couple of them were very loose. Anyway I torqued them up to 40ft/lbs.

I have no idea if that could have caused the problem or relates to it at all but I will keep my eye on it and see if it helps at all.

BUMP! (I have the same leak, never drips though) Just curious to see responses) 2000 4.7 73000.
P.S. My power steering pump just started leaking, along with steering rack. Those cheap dodge parts. Oh well, at least it'll be cheap and easy to fix.
