i am going to the srip this friday with my 2002 4.7 auto cc dakota. what are some tequniques for starting? i don't want to just punch the gas and roast the tires to the 60' mark. what do you guys do to not lose traction at the line. i am using the stock 16x8 wheels and goodyear tires. slicks are out of the question.

Hold your left foot on the brake, and give enough gas to "set the truck"...Right to the point of where your tire are gonna spin, but don't, at about 2000 rpm (power braking). when the light hits the last yellow, take your left foot off the brake and floor it.

when I floor it from standing, my truck burns
all through first gear (auto), shifts into second,
then goes back to first...is this cause I left my
OD on?

I am heading to the track on Thursday (first
time) and dont want to look stupid, by hitting
some 11 or 12 sec 1/8th miles.

should I race with the OD off?

Here's a list of what you should do:(correct me if I am wrong)

BTW, this is what I do at the track where i occasionally race.

Proceed to water box(or skip past), and wet your rear tires. Then move out of box, and power brake, smoke a little to get your tires hot, then move up. At the line, the first set then second set of yellow lights(stage) come on, indicating you are ready. As kris expertly advises, use your left foot on the brake, right on gas, and hold engine RPM to 200 or so, as the lights drop remain at 2k, then as it goes green, lift off brake and GO GO GO.

D~I race with OD off, but I try to keep it in 1st, by lifting my foot off the gas for a short second, and mash it, so it doesn't shift down being as first is the strongest gear on an AUTO

~~Eric

sorry about the length, last I ran was a 17.8 on a V6 with a magnaflow muffler, auto tranny

BlackDak: Don't use 1st as the starting gear as it will run slower if you manually shift than letting "D" do its job. (Reverse band doesn't disengage quick enough and causes a slight "bog" as 2nd it taking over.) This doesn't happen in "D". Also, grab yourself some VHT, put it in s spray bottle, and lightly mist your tires 15-20 minutes before your runs. Do a quick 3-5 second burnout in the water box (no smoke screen burnouts required...they don't work well on street tires anyway) and watch your tires stick like glue. :)

You can also let the air in your rear tires down to about 26-28 psi (or less) and that will give you a bigger contact patch for more bite.

In the water box, please do the guys behind you a favor and drive AROUND the water and then back up to the EDGE of the box. If you drive thru like John Force, your wide-a$$ front tres pick up water and leave two big ol' wet stripes right up to the starting line. Water's the last thing you want on the starting line.

ANyhow, once you back up to the water's edge, set your left foot on the brake, gas it into a power brake. Be looking in the side mirrror. As sooon as you start to see smoke, release the brake and slowly let off the gas and the tires will begin to bite as the revs come down.

Pull immediately into the first staging beam. Don't trip both staging beams at once, because that's just a courtesy. That rushes the other driver and a lot of times, the starter will make you back out of the lights. Watch the other guy's light and after he lights one bulb, you can pull into the second light.

Then set your brakes as Kris mentioned above and get ready... when you see the third yellow come on... HIT IT!!!

Good luck.... oh yeah, let us know how it goes.

Hot Rod magazine, (they probably know a little about drag racing) says stay out of the water all together with factory radials. They just pick up too much water and you have to really smoke them to get all the water that gets inside the tread off, plus the water inside the tread then get slug up into the wheel wells where it proceeds to drip back onto the tires. They say that if you heat factory radials until they smoke you are just going to make them greasy. They recommended just a good spin to clean any crap off the tires. They aslo don't recommend airing down factory radials as the sidewall will bulge out but that puts a slight "cup" into the center of the tire (the article actually recommended 5-10 pounds more in the rear and front tires). Try some burnouts with different air pressure (no powerbraking) on clean pavement and see what pressure leaves the most even black marks. This is all info from the Feburary 99 issue of Hot Rod.
