In sept of 04 got a qc 4.7 slt. When I first got it I was all over the throttle and got 11.5 mpg. found a vacuum leak and sealed it and took a trip 200 miles each way got18.7. never get better than 14.5. always run 87 from shell, mobil or the like. Even drop the gate and granny it. NO commuting at all. Just got 3" cat with a Killer mag tip. definite hp gain. to soon to see mpg gain.

I have to say, I am pretty impressed with the milage I get on my Dak, '01 Extended cab 4.7L Auto. I have a tonneau cover on, and if I use the cruise control when I'm on the highway I can get about 526.1KM's to a tank of gas (75L tank) ... For a truck with a V8...Thats pretty good. I had a 97 Cherokee with the 4.0L and it didnt do much better.

When stating mpgs it is essential to list what config you have. Qc, ext cab, reg cab, 4x4, Awd, 4x2, axle ratio, auto, or manual. Hard to compare/judge otherwise.

thanks for the input. I thought I was Fairly clear but will be a little more specific. 2002 Dakota Quad cab 4.7 liter magnum v8. Only mod is the 3" cat with Magna Flow tip. unsure of tire size. Probably whatever stock is. unsure of diff. but at 65 tach is 2000. Not driven in traffic whatsoever. I drive an astro for work which is at home with me at night. The truck is almost just a bad ass grocery getter. No 4x4. Already taken back to dealer once after discovery of vac leak and they said nothing shows on computer tests. still 38500 miles under warranty.

Sounds like you have the 3.92s. First you say you got 18.7 on a 200 mile trip and the next sentence you say you never get better than 14.5. Which is it? 14.5 seems low unless your doing a lot of WOT, my 4x4 qc auto 4.7 3.55 245/70R16 stock(magnaflow muffler, airaid) gets that. Where exactly was the vacume leak BTW?

grrrr thanks for the input. You caught me. I am stupid. I meant that was the only long trip I took since I've had it. Around town after work and on weekend I've not seen better than 14.5. the leak was on the top in plain sight behind the battery. I would have to look to be more precise but it is dark now. whats wot? may put 150 miles a week if I really try. advice on any mods? have airraid and tb spacer on order

Another consideration is we are now in winter. Fuel mileage always drops 2-3 mpg in winter. Every vehicle I have driven did. Why you ask. Fuel is reformulated in the winter and cold air don't help to vaporize fuel. The 2 together add up to more fuel consumption. Also check your tire pressure like JechtX said.

Looks like this is new to you guys if you think vehicles really get mpg on the sticker. Sticker #s are under fairly ideal circumsrances - nothing gets the sticker milage, not just your truck.

Always have to laugh at people who buy a heavy V-8 truck, then complain about gas mileage. If you are that worried about gas mileage buy a hybrid car. If you do alot of city driving, be happy you are getting 14mpg. I do good to get above 11mpg in my R/T with 90% city driving. San Diego traffic sucks. Don't even bother with dropping the tailgate. It won't help much, and only causes problems by having that extra overhang on the rear.

I did buy it in late fall. tire pressure is ok. If the sticker was a little more honest we would not see this post in the first place. Mpg is the first clue that something may be going wrong. now I am straightened out. hopefully i will post no mare stupid faq's. this is always asked on this board by dipsh*ts like me.
