I have a 00 Dakota EXT with the 4.7 (auto) and about 3 days ago it started making this noise kind of like a fan rubbing against metal or a flywheel griding type sound (kind of like the sounds a skill saw makes when its slowing down... Its only got 66K and I have no idea what this noise is...sorry for the lack of mechanical description, but I would really like to know what it is!! Thanks for any help!!!

Check your serpentine belt for longitudinal fraying (your belt starting to come apart length wise). If you don't see any problems with the belt, can you determine what area of the engine the noise is coming from? Is the noise constant? You can use a BFS (large screwdriver) as a stethoscope, putting it against the engine in various locations (avoid moving parts) and pressing your ear against the end of the handle. Good luck!

I just bought a 01 dakota 4.7L auto. I noticed the same sound, like a metal on plastic. I only hear it when its cold, and when kept in a warm garage it disappears. I hope to find the problem soon.

Turns out it was the backing plate on my front brakes (which, incidentally, were just replaced 2 weeks prior). Took it into the dealer and they adjusted it and now the noise is all gone.
