I want to change the muffler on my stock '04 Quad Cab and wanted to see if anybody has done the same thing. I plan to unclamp the original and replace it with a Magnaflow of the same length and pipe size. It looks simple, but I wasn't sure if the new one will clear the frame & driveline. The stocker is kinda round w/ a center inlet and offset outlet. I'll buy a oval muffler with the same inlet and outlet setup. I want to keep the same tailpipe to keep cost low. Looks like I can angle the new one to clear. I'm just looking for a better V8 sound.

What do you think? Will this work? Thanks!

If you replace the muffler bearing at the same time it will allow for the necessary swing in the muffler to match up.

The only direct muffler drop-in that I found was a glasspack. I would not recommend that unless highway cab drone doesn't bother you.

Otherwise a Magnaflow will fit with a short extension pipe. I have a 4x9 oval offset (2.5" si/so) that matches up to the existing pipe, again, with about a 4" extension pipe.

Also, check the muffler clamp types that you have. If you have band clamps, doing it yourself should be easy. If you have the old-style muffler clamps (bent rod with threads, clamp, and nuts), then you may want to take it to a shop. I could not "convince" mine to come out (had muffler clamps) and ended up having it cut out. Others have had success though.

I did the exact same thing with a Pacesetter muffler that I had in my garage for over 10 years. As long as you have the same overall length and offset/center nipples you'll be all set. The muffler will clear the driveshaft and the frame(although it is very close to the frame).

If you're looking for a GOOD sound, not loud, and still a little rumble, and want to spend little money, Loose the third cat!

On my 4.7 QC, I had a nice piece of aluminized pipe bent the small offset, and welded in for $30. You can get a piece of flexible muffler hose and clamp it for even less.

Sounds great, not loud, performance increase?-yes. YOu should see the screen that covers the pipe completely in one end of the third cat!

If you don't have three cats-never mind!

I did the same thing on my 02' CC.

Used a 14256 muffler bought from www.performancepeddler.com. You'll need a couple new clamps (unless yours are still pristine, they are only a few bucks) and short extension (I bought 18" and cut to fit).

Sounds about the same as stock on first startup, gets louder with a few hundred miles. Not annoying at ALL, sounds great.

Buy a Thrush Cherry Bomb 2.5 in 2.5 out 28" long from Advance. About $25. I did last year for a 2004 4.7 5 speed. It is great. No resonance in 5th gear, but you can hear it otherwise. I kept my original should I ever want to put it back. No cutting, no welding, just bolt on.

Thanks for the info guys.

caulk04 could you have used a larger muffler?
I think yours is 5x8. I was looking at the Magnaflows that were 4x9 or 5x11 or other brands that were 5x10. I'm not as concerned about the length as I am the width. Aren't the smaller mufflers louder? I don't want one that will drone on highway.

Thanks!

Doug, the 14256 is the same as the one I put on, 12256, except I bought the alumized version instead of the stainless version.

My Magnaflow does not drone, but the Thrush I had on did. Kind of opposite of "Info"s experience, but I have an auto.

Thanks for the info Lurkin. I was planning on getting the aluminized version also. I think it will work based on what everybody has said...but you never know until you try to hook them up yourself! Did you have any trouble getting the tail pipe to line up? Did you have to use a short extension? My stock muffler is 28" overall and the Magnaflow is 24". Thanks.

Doug, you will need an extension pipe, about 4" I think (yup, I see you've measured above). The offset in the muffler is close enough to perfect.

Note that I had mine welded in, as getting the glasspack off after I'd attached it with the U-bolt clamps was not going to be fun.

I just wanted to post a final message on this to say I completed this project. I unclamped the oe muffler and drilled out the tap welds and reused the band clamps on the Magnaflow (#12256). The new muffler lined up with the stock tail pipe with no problem. I needed only one more clamp and used a 6" pipe extension between the Magnaflow and tailpipe.

I don't know that it adds any more hp/torque but it's sure it worth the effort for the sound. It has a nice mellow rumble at idle but really sounds great when floored from a stop. There isn't much reasonance at highway speeds so it's a nice all-around muffler. Thanks guys for your suggestions and tips!
