Just a quick question -

I was planning on starting a project truck which would consist of a dakota with mopar's crate 360 that makes about 380 hp. What transmission would best fit it along with a rear-end.

The actual build wont occur for awhile but I'd like to start pricing it out and maybe looking for parts.

The main application for it will be for street and racing. When I get another dakota I'm going to completely take the drive train out and start from scratch.

I'd say you need a 727 that's been built up. You'll need a convertor with a higher stall speed, too. Cooler is a must.
OR, go with a 833 4spd.,(or a T56 for that matter, check out Kiesler's kit) even a 23 spline with never break behind a 360, and the 18 sp. are getting hard to come by.
Easier, obviously, to go with an auto, but might be more fun with a 4 spd.

Call Wayne at APS Precision. He builds super strong trannys for these trucks. Drop in replacement and easily capable of handling that kind of power.

If you pick up a Mopar crate motor or shortblock, make sure it is checked out by a machine shop. Quality control on this motors has not been very good.

I was thinking about beefing up a 727, but a 4 speed would be much more fun.

I'm glad I know about any quality control problems, if I do what I want to do it will be a big investment for me and I just want everything right.

Thanks for the thoughts.

A agree with sneezer, look into a built APS 46RE transmission, 4 spd auto and you can throw just about anything at it.
