Subject: Gas Mileage for 5.2 4x4 ?
IP: Logged

Message:
Recently purchased a '97 5.2L 4x4 and I'm getting 11-12mpg with combined city/highway driving. Usually ~10 city, 12 hwy. Running in 4WD or 2WD doesn't make more than a 1mpg difference. Everything about the truck is bone stock and it has 93k miles.

This fuel economy seems a little low to me. I see others reporting 16-17 mpg on this board. What's the deal? Does my fuel economy suck compared to everyone else? Or is it average for the truck?

Either way, I'll be doing plugs/wires soon since they are original, maybe that will help.

Start fresh with new dist.cap, rotar, plug
wires, plugs (3923 (Autolites),and a pcv valve. Then clean your throttle body and add a top brand
fuel injector cleaner (expect to pay up to $50 for a top brand that works). Change your air filter to a less restrictive type like K N etc. and also go with a good cat back less restrictive exhaust system.Switching over to an electric fan would also help your mileage. You'll notice lot's
more power and your 5.2 will thank you for
letting it breath with better M.P.G. I average around 15 M.P.G. with my 99' Sport and I've got my foot into it often ! -Mike

Where do you live? and what is recent?
If you ahve only had the truck in cold weather, like here in NY, you can't expect much better than that. Especially on short trips.
I have the same truck as you. I put an electric fan on and didn't gain anything. I would still recomend it because things warm up faster in the winter.
Start using the synthetic oils in the engine, transfer case, front end, and rear end.
Check and recheck your tire pressure.

Everyone else has given good advise. A general tune-up at that mileage should help, and even if it doesn't, you'll know everything is in good shape.

Once it warms up, you will gain a little. i am getting 12-13 winter, 15-16 summer.

Also remember, if you do things to add power, it usually involves using more fuel.
Your best bet is to concentrate on getting the power that you already have to work better for you. Like I said before, the electric fan. When you replace your tires, go skinnier. I went the other way, and lost a little. Personally, I think the tires you have make the most difference in what people are getting for mileage.
One last point. If you do alot of city driving, think about changing gears. I have the 3.55's and am waiting for my 4.10's to come in. My friend has the same setup as I do. He does most of his driving in the city and he gained about 2 mpg by going with the 4.10's and hasn't had any noticable loss on the highway.

These guys are right about the mileage. I have a 98 5.2cc 4x4. When I bought the truck last year, with 25k on it, I was getting about 14-15 mpg avg. Just using drop-in K&N air filter and Magnaflow muffler added about 1.5 to 2.5 mpg. Consider getting a tonneau cover of some sort and that'll be good for another 1mpg or so depending on type. And I'd have to say your tires play a big part too. I lost about 2mpg by using an offroad tire compared to the streets (love the offroading). Be sure to check tire pressure and alignment. Little things like this can make a difference.
