I was just told by a Dodge service manager that I should not install a "generic" remote starter in my 2004 Dakota. He said it would result in false error messages from the computer. He also said that there wasn't a Dodge starter for the '04's. Anyone have any issues with a starter in an '04?

As of late last year, there were no remote start kits offered for Dakotas from Chrysler, so he's not trying to get you to spend your money with him. Aftermarket is the only option. The info given by the service manager was probably well intentioned and trying to keep you from installing an aftermarket system that can (but will not always) affect vehicle electronics. If you have an aftermarket system installed, make sure you can get a guarantee in writing that the installation will not adversely affect vehicle electronics with NO exceptions. I would do this with any vehicle (2000 and newer) when adding a remote start, alarm system or other similar modifications that can potentially affect the vehicle electronics in an undesireable manner. Otherwise....BEWARE.

My dealer, Hiller Co. of Marion MA. uses DEI valet, installed by an independant in the area. DEI makes a great product. Bulldog is great too.
