Subject: Paint fade???
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey, A few months ago somebody (probably a ricer) removed the DODGE logo from my tailgate. Now that it's nice and sunny out, I can see a dark and glossy spot where the logo used to be. How can I get this to blend in better? I'd like to remove the blue-green stripes from the side of my truck, but I wont if I cant find a way to make the paint colors match.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer
Gen II Geoff

That's the "good" paint showing from where your decals were but I'm sure you know that.
The only thing you can do is to have the whole tailgate buffed out to try and remove the oxidation from the old paint and make it as new as possible.
I had to do this on a boat after the decals were removed.
Try your tailgate. If it works then you can try the rest of the truck.

I`m an auto painter by trade and I see these things all of the time. You probably will have to repaint any-all of the affected panels. The problem with trying to buff it out is,the veh. is going to have a clear coat on it and by buffing it you will only make the clear more shiny not the color coat below it.Now if the truck has a single stage(no clear coat)paint job on it , yes buffing may help, just make sure you dont burn the paint if you use a high speed buffer. To see if its cleared or not try a spot with some wax ,if its got color on the rag its not clearcoated.

If I have to repaint the panels, what kind of paint should I use? Right now it's got a clear coat on top, so I can't really tell what kind of base coat was used. The clear coat is peeling off of my hood so I was already considering repainting the hood this summer, so what's two more panels?

Later, Geoff
