I purchased a 1999 Dakota R/T 5.9 in December. Since then the CHECK ENGINE light has come on twice. The first time the dealer said the code said it was the O2 Sensor, but they said they don't replace it the 1st time, then re-set it. then it came on again and I took it back to them today, they said it was caused by the after market exhaust system that was on it giving the computer the indication the fuel was set too lean, and I'll have to live with the CHECK ENGINE light being on. Are they handing me a line of #^%^&?

What do you mean the after market exhaust? Is it just a muffler change? Or is it the headers, cat, and muffler. I don't have the answers but I have found that on this site the more specifics you supply the better/more responses you will recieve

Sorry, I did find out more of what they were talking about. It was changed from the Cat back.

I don't think that change a muffler would cause the engine light to come on. I had a cat. that was in horrible condition. Motor ran like crap but there was no check engine light on. I replaced the cat and also installed a flow master. Runs better now. It is probably just the o2 sensors that need to be replaced. I think that if the factory just resets the computer and the problem is not fixed, then the check engine light will come back on. I am surprised that more people have not yet chimed in on this.

If it makes you feel any better, I have had idle problems with my dakota. First thing they asked was "is the check engine light on?" Depending on what dealer you take it to, they can be pretty helpless at times. The truck stalled out when they drove it, but they could not properly diagnos the problem. The so called experts at that facility still charged me $86.

That's because it didn't set any codes, so they have no idea how to troubleshoot it.
