I just bought a 99 dakota 5.2 with manual about 1.5 months ago. It had 87k miles now has 91k. Good motor. Mine has decent amount of power. I feel it could be more, but I know it needs some work. The plenum gasket (belly pan)I have heard often goes out at around 80k miles. I noticed a huge power drop off about 2 weeks ago after a trip a some long mountain road. changed my catalytic converter, as it was bad, and the power was back. Other than that I have not had any problems. I do know that my power steering pump is going out though. The 5.2 has been around a long time, I am sure most here will say there is a reason for that. Others will give more details, like I said only have had mine for 1.5 months

The 5.2 was one tough motor, if you supplied the routine maintenance. I bought a 1992 RC Sport 5.2 3:55 auto new, and the only internal work up to 217,000 miles was a distributor drive gear and timing chain when the intake manifold leaked slightly at 52K (under warranty). I changed the Pennzoil 10w-30 and "old style" 318 oil filter every 3K. A K&N drop-in, and Bosch Platinum +4 plugs were used. My current 4.7 has 102K now, the only difference being Mobil 1 in the crankcase.

Well I can tell my power steering pump is going bad. Because in the mornings (or any other time when it is cold and wet out the belt sqeels. New Dodge belt though. The when I look under the hood to see where exactly the sound is coming from I see the power steering pulley wobbling. When it gets warm/dry it stops wobbling and the sound goes away.

the belt squealing (correct spelling by the way dropout) could very easily be caused by a slightly less then ideal (worn) belt tensioner and an alternater going to full field. In my many years under the hood I have never seen a PS pully wobble then stop wobbling without the pulley or the pump being replaced in between.

my 2001 dodge dakota is hard to start. Engine turns over fine, but will crank for 5-10 seconds before starting, then runs very rough for a few seconds before smoothing out. Doesn't do it every time. Otherwise, runs fine, uses no fluids, get 18-21 mpg. Any suggestions?

Hay just hit 205+ thousand miles on my 1992 and
she still barks the tires with very little
effort,I mean sitting at 8-900 rpm and auto lock
posie (srry can't spell) kicking in on dry
pavement at about 1500 rpm. Not much for power bby
as light as the truck is it makes it fun to drive.
Would love to milk a little more power out of her
though

Motor will not fire. Is this common? And whats a quick and
inexpensive way to find the problem? I've changed distributor
and plugs. Even bought starter fluid to just to see if it would
kick one time, nothing no fire. Any answers will be helpful!

@Jojo Wright- Let me know if you figure it
out.. My 91 Dakota really hates to start in the
morning. It cranks just fine. In the afternoon,
it starts perfectly. Only in the morning does
it have trouble starting. I can't seem to
figure it out...

@Josh and JoJo
You maybe having problems with the ASD Relay/Circuit. It provides power to the Ignition and the fuel injectors. A fairly simple way to by pass it, to test if that's what your problem is, To use a jumper wire from the positive side of your battery to the the slot of the ASD relay socket closest to the engine/closest to the edge of the relay/fuse box. If it starts right up then you know where to start looking or find a key powered source to power the slot and eliminate the ASD circuit.
