Subject: How heavy have you towed?

Message:
I am pickuping a 04 4.7 QC AWD on Wednesday with

HD SERVICE GROUP -inc: 750 amp maintenance-free
battery, HD engine cooling

and

TRAILER TOW GROUP -inc: class IV trailer hitch
receiver, 7-lead wiring harness, 7/4 pin adaptor
wiring pigtail (REQ: ADJ HD Service Group)

I plan to two my car (3200 pounds + 1200 pound
trailer) once a month or so for about 200 miles
and for a 2000 mile round trip once next year.
This trailer has trailer brakes.

But my father has asked me to help him swap
tractors between two farms that are about 55
miles apart. The tractors are both full size
tractors that are used for bailing and hauling
hay. The trailer weighs about 2000 pounds. I
will assume that I will be towing 5K - 7K
pounds. The tractor trailer does not have
brakes but we will only be on farm roads and I
wil stay back from other vehicles.

The most concerning part is that the
tractors will need to be driven on and off of
the trailer which will result in the back of the
truck being lifted.

I found a post about towing 8400 pounds and
another about towing 11000 pounds so I assume
this is possible.

Any tips?

Should I get a load balancing hitch to replace
the factory two package?

What is the heaviest weight you have towed?

You don't say wether you have the 3.55 or 3.92 gears. You can tow more with 3.92. I tow about 5000 with the 3.55 with no problems. If you're worried about the trailer reefing on your truck while you load it, just put some blocks by the back corners of the trailer as you load. You might want to look up the tractors to get a better idea about the weight. I'd be more concerned with lack of trailer brakes - if a child runs out in front of you its a potential disaster.

I've towed my 91 Dakota club cab on a open 18 ft car hauler several times with my dads 02 quad cab AWD with 4.7. Sounds very similar to your truck. I've had no problems at all but I do have trailer brakes and I wouldn't think of towing that kind of weight without them.

I would prefer trailer brakes but in this
scenario I am not going to have any.

The roads to be traveled are almost exclusively
flat farm roads with little traffic and we will
not travel through any residential areas.

Tractors can be pretty darn heavy, even smaller ones. My dad and I brought a Case IH CX100 tractor home from auction with his 5.9L Ram 1500 and it was quite a load for that truck. That tractor (a 100 engine HP 4-cylinder row-crop 2wd model) weighs about 7000 lbs and the trailer was a fairly heavy duty one, probably a ton or more. We had trailer brakes so getting whoa-ed down wasn't too bad, but acceleration sucked (even with the slope of the interstate onramps on our side!) Blocking the trailer backend when loading sounds like a good idea, this tractor picked the truck right up by the hitch ball when we loaded it.

My truck is a 03 AWD 4.7 with 3.92 rear and all the heavy duty stuff. I pull a flat bed with brakes for hay and tractor hauling myself. I wouldn't recomend it for long hauls, but short hauls are no problem for my Dak. I pulled 10,000# between the trailer and hay with no trouble. It pulls my three horse trailer fully loaded on open road with problems too. I would look into some trailer brakes though if going to do this very often. Its a real risk without them.

Question for Kowalski or anybody with 4.7/3.55's - I just bought an '02 Dakota with this set-up and plan to haul a travel trailer which when loaded comes in at the 4700# limit the owner's manual states. Kowalski, as you have no problems hauling 5000# I shouldn't have any either, but I'm curious as to what kind of terrain and distances you are pulling your trailer.

reemster - usually about a three hour run, includes large hills (NH), and sometimes July heat with AC on. Can also include an hour of idling waiting in line at the speedway. If it doesn't run hot after 3 hours, I don't think it will run hot no matter how long you run. I have HO cams and Leach flash, but it towed well before too. Don't be afraid to let it rev - I try to avoid hard starts but don't mind getting after it for the hills. Have fun !

I towed a '86 Jeep Grand Wagoneer on a tilt bed trailer.
The Wag weighs well over 4500# and with the trailer, I guessing the total weight was over 5500#.
My 97 Dakota with it's 5.2L towed it, but did not like it.
IMHO, Dakotas are NOT good tow rigs.
Being a Jeep enthusiast, I bought a 1981 Jeep J20 3/4 ton pickup to replace my Dakota.

My 99 5.2l 4x4 Club cab has pulled probably way more than it should, I moved a 1965 30' Wooden Chris Craft about 25 miles with no problems. I probably could of put the truck in the boat, had a full ton of wood pellets in the bed of the truck (the look on the guys face at home depot gave me a good laugh). Have also towed a 30' Suntracker Party hut from Syracuse to the thousands islands with no problems besides getting a little warm.
