Subject: Cold Air Intakes
IP: Logged

Message:
I am considering installing a Volant cold air intake on my 2000 4.7 liter Dakota. The price is 203.00 plus shipping.

Does this modification make a big difference in horsepower and MPG? Also are they easy to install?

Thanks!

it does make a difference but it's minor, anything is better than
the factory restrictive system though and i would say every little
bit helps especially if you are going to do other mods, the
smoother the air flow in to the engine the better, put a K&N air
filter on there and you're set, personally i don't think there is
anything to be gained in mpg, certainly not enough to really
matter

$200 is outrageous though, i'd build my own

yes they are easy to install

Anyone that thinks the Dakota intake is restrictive should check out what they put in the fender of a Neon. When you see that , you can't figure out how the thing will even start. It makes the Dak intake look like a race part.

Tractorfix, the volume requirements are very different for the Neon. Very little is gained by replacing that system either.

When you shell out a couple of hundred dollars for a new system, for the most part, the only thing you get is a better looking system. In the case of Dakotas, you are far ahead to use the drop-in K&N filter, unless you plan significant future mods.

Keep in mind, it's rare to find someone who has already shelled out the money to admit that they got anything less than 10 additional ponies from their investment.

N56629, I guess then that I am "rare",,, read on.

I had a Volant on my 02 QC 4.7 for about a year. Found it on eBay for $110 though. It may be good for a few horseys, but nothing noticeable by itself.

The only noticeable thing was the intake noise. If you like that sound, then it's good, but I'm not a big fan.

I removed it after about a year and went back to the stock system. I didn't notice a difference going back. If anything the stock system felt better.

After a couple of months I did use the Volant tube for the link between the TB and the airbox. That cleaned up the engine bay, but no noticable improvement.

If you plan to make other changes to the breathing ability, then an air intake may make sense. For me, the noise wasn't worth it without a noticeable performance increase.

Ah, but see, you didn't pay full price ;-)

I would bet that those that saw or felt a significant increase did so because they replaced the stock system and filthy filter at the same time. I know that I notice a difference everytime I replace any of my airfilters, both in power and gas milage.

you want performance from a CAI? youll need to compliment it with a performane throttle body and headers. its then youll be exploiting all the components to their fullest potential.

Jerry M,

You asked three questions. I believe the answer to those, in order, are no, no, and yes.

I personally have a hybrid, homebrew, with a K&N drop in. It was low $, I don't 'show' my engine bay, so the homebrew look doesn't matter to me.

And, the stock system IS a CAI!, mush more than some peoples modded systems.

N56629, I guess that's what I was trying to say. I had the Air intake all apart to install a cruise control, and it just didn't look like a bad setup to me. The filter is big, and the runner is smooth and straight. My TB hat is a big square one as opposed to the round ones I see on earlier trucks. I think the runner may be bigger too.

So what's the deal? Do you think it's your life's calling to monitor threads for repeat questions? Did you think that you were going to discover something new and exciting here?

Google, get a life and learn to ignore subjects you've read about before.

I know most people here have read car and truck magazines before. Now how many of think that all the material in that mag is new. Damn right, it's all been published many many times before. There is no subject matter that has not been previously discussed here before. If there is, it's on the Off Topic Board. If you are looking for something new, go there or buy a different vehicle and find a different forum.

I know we won't find anything new coming out of goggle.

Google,

At first I did do a search on yahoo and google on cold air intake kits to find suppliers and to see what they cost. I found a Volant for 203.00.

The next step in my process was to post a message here to get others opinions and ideas with the most current and up to date information.

PS- don't kick the doggy!

I'm just curious as to why you care. Can you come up with a question that has never been asked before? As far as I can see there is nothing that hasn't been asked.

How much does 4.7 liters of B.S. weigh? Ill bet nobody ever asked that question before...I just bought a Volant CAI and all i can do is hope for the best. "Someone told me" that considering that i live at a high altitude, 8750ft, i can only gain by getting more oxygen to my engine. You can only gain by asking questions. And wouldnt you say that asking a question is research?

Adding a cold air intake is one on the best mods you can do.

I have an Airraid with a Poweraid (or is it Powerstack?) 7" cone filter with a heat shield. Total cost about $200 for my V-6 3.9L.

The filter points directly into the air stream that is producted by taking off the rubber flap in the front. So, when driving cold air is flowing directly into the air filter. Does this have a (very) minor turbo charger effect? Possibly.

In the stock set up the air is taken from the fender area. The air flow is limited or still.
