Subject: Rear Main Seal Leak
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 5.2L with a leaking rear main seal. I have about 85,000 miles on it and have changed the oil religiously. Question is, how much would I be looking at having to pay to have the leak fixed? I don't have the facility or the confidence to do it myself. Thanks in advance for the help.

if the seal is physically damaged it won`t work. it well may be but this stuff is worth a shot. if nothing else you`ll have a very clean motor.

http://www.auto-rx.com/pages/sealleak.htm

it could save some cash and down time.

Actually, it shouldnt cost that much. I have a 93 with a 5.2 V8 and the rear main is leaking and the front crank seal also and I am getting both of those done for 250.00 The mechanic claims the book rate at 6 hours but I call his BS and told him I knew better since I had the trannie out myself in less than 60 minutes. He backed down and lowered his price.

As far as the liquid magic stuff, I dont trust them. All they do is swell the seals, and that may not be the greatest thing in the world for good seals.

Just my .02 change anyone????

i`m very skeptical about "snake oils" but auto-rx is one of the rare ones that works as advertised. it doen`t just swell seals.

Rear main oil seal leaks are not very common. Make sure it's not the oil pressure sending unit leaking down the back of the engine before having it repaired. These things are very common.
