Subject: New owner;questions about engine/exhaust

Message:
Just bought a 2002 QC 4x4 with 26,000 miles on it. It's got the 4.7, and I'm thinking of adding some engine and/or exhaust goodies to it. I'm thinking of staring with an Airaid, then headers and a new set of pipes. I'd imagine this setup would yield 40-50hp; has anyone else made these additions? What was your experience like? Are there other additions I should be considering? I'd appreciate the pros/cons of this setup and others. I can't seem to find any pipes that aren't straight--I'd like one behind each rear wheel turning out. Any thoughts on specific makes/model numbers of heades and exhaust systems are appreciated. I want to up the HP and have great sound, but not too loud in the cabin at highway cruise and not annoying to others...thanks in advance.

I've got an 02 QC 4x2 with a 360 Air Intake and 3" Magnaflow exhaust. I got the exhaust first and I lost noticeable low end torque, but after the 360 air intake it was just about what it felt like stock as far as low end, but there was a very noticable jump in mid range exceleration and the sound it makes is great. The Magnaflow is just the sound I wanted, nice idle sound, pretty quiet inside, but very loud when the pedal is mashed. Another plus, I improved my mileage by about 1.5 mpg.

TerraFORM - I'm confused as to why you'd expect those kind of gains with those mods, especially when they claim the 4.7 exhaust manifolds flow within 2% of headers. K&N struggled for a couple years to come up with an intake with something like a 7hp gain. For the money you are looking at spending, I believe you'd see better gains going to the HO cams and getting a PCM flash.

Kowalski: Indeed, maybe I cannot expect such gains with the mods I mentioned. I'm thinking I'll start simple--I've already got a K&N filter; probably just get a 180-deg thermo, maybe some headers and a good cat-back system. Maybe I'll stick with a single exit for that extra bit of power. How much more could I expect with those mods and, say, a 70mm TB? I confess I'm mostly ignorant and just want a decent increase in power and good sound, not necessarily a racer.

You'll see a bit more, no hard #s for you - some have even claimed a loss of torque with exhaust mods but most who do that balanced with intake mods report a gain. Gibson seems favored by those who want to avoid the in cab drone.
Simply swapping to the Jeep HO cams gives most of the torque increase of the HO motor however, and the hardest part is R&R of the valve covers. Lots of info here if you do a search. No need to pull radiator, chhange springs, etc. The aluminum head 4.7 loves extra spark advance, but that usually means sending the PCM out to be flashed. I can still run 87 octane except when towing. There would be more power with thse mods and you could just change muffler for better tone - this doesn't make it a race truck; as you can see, mine's a work truck.

I don't know if I want to add cams or mess with the engine at this point. I'm thinking just intake and exhaust right now... Maybe a PCM flash one day. Are those FIPK's from K&N worth the upgrade from a regular K&N filter? If not, is there something else (i.e., Airaid) or a K&N cone filter that may be better? Is it true that a one-exit catback exhaust is better than a two-exit? That performance is better with one? Is there anything else that I should be considering given what I'm trying to do? I don't know if getting headers as well is worth it without getting the cams to go with them. Thanks.
