My 94 Dakota 4X4 tach and speedo have been jumping wildly while going down the road and go to zero when the headlights are turned on. ABS light flashes and radio powers off and on. Amp gauge has been showing a very low reading so I replaced the alternator and thought I might get lucky. No dice, still same prob. Headlights also get dimmer when this happens. Do I have a computer problem or a short somewhere. I wiggled every wire under the hood with the radio on but could not find anything . Help!!!

Sounds like maybe a bad ground somewhere. Check all the ground wires, especially the ones on the battery itself. If they are even slightly corroded, I'd say replace the cables.

My '03 Dakota speedometer went to zero, odometer stopped, ABS and Brake Light went on and later Engine light went on and cruise control gave out when rear-end went out after leaking and spraying rear brakes. New rack and pinion fixed - luckily under warranty.

Check the wire loom in the engine bay on the driverside the wires tend to corrode there . Also could be a speed sencor .

Definitely sounds like a bad ground or corroded wire. I'd have to agree with HSKR on this. You're going to have to use a logical plan for troubleshooting this problem, you can't just wiggle wires and hope the problem jumps out and waves at you. You need to trace the wiring from the instrument panel back towards the power source looking for loose ground connections and even corroded wiring. Good luck!

Over the weekend I made a couple of trips up and down a steep imbankment that leads to a low water crossing and now everything works fine. I think this verifys that there is a bad ground somewhere and after the shakeups on the crossing I'm back in ground until next time. I'll start at the front checking grounds and I think I'll replace the battery cables just to be sure. Thanks for the help.

Jim

I failed to mention in the original post that also when things are going haywire, the headlights are very dim and the voltage gauge on the dash reads very low. Seems to me that whatever the problem is it causes the alternator to think that it needs very little output. If the dakota had a voltage regulator I would chang it out but I understand that the computer handles the work that the regulator used to do??
