Subject: '00 SLT 5.9L Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I just purchased a very nice 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab SLT with the 5.9L 360. It has 49,000 miles and is in very good condition. My question is: even after changing the plugs to Bosch 2 platinums, and putting in a new air filter, the engine doesn't have a lot of snap from the line. I am not sure if this is normal, since I have never driven a 360 before, or there is something else wrong. Also, it seems to idle a little rough at times. Anyone have any suggestions?

get rid of the platinum plugs and switch to either a Champion LC4 or an Autolite 3923. Those work the best in my opinion. The platinums cause drivability issues. I see poor performance and misfires all the time.

Thanks. I guess I will see if the "moneyback guarantee" holds water.

Mine has pretty good pick up, for a pick up. It's certainly not as good as my Cobra; but I think it was nearly as good as the '05 Mustang I drove a couple weeks ago. You won't get a lot of hp out of it, not designed for it. But it will make good torque.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect sports card performance out of it. It just seems WAY too sluggish. The rough idle has concerned me as well. I will have to try swapping out the plugs, and then go from there.

Platinum plugs in the 5.9 aren't recomended. And as far as the Autolite 3923's, they aren't the best either. Sure they are cheap, but many have had rough idle issues with them as well. Personally, I like the Bosch copper core plugs(same price as Autolites) or the Champion plugs, both in the stock replacement style(not one step colder as many recomend) The problem with the Champions, is they seem to need changed more often than other plugs and are more epensive than other copper core plugs. Many people swear by the NGK plugs. I haven't used them yet, but have a set in my drawer waiting to go into my new motor.

After searching the forums here to get more plug info, the Autolite 3923 seems to be the top recomended. But when I went to pick them up at a local parts store, they list the Autolite 5224 as the replacement part for a 5.9L 360. I didn't even see a stocking spot for the 3923; they did have one for the 3924. Since the 3923 isn't listed as a stock replacement, am I supposed to use it; and what is the difference from the 3923 to the 5224?

I do not recomend the 3923 in your 5.9. It is a 1 step colder plug and also non-extended tip. If you do not want rough idling problems, don't get the 3924 or 3923, or any Autolite for that matter(IMO) Just get the stock replacement style unless you have detonation problems. Then you might need a colder plug. I like the Bosch copper core plugs for econmoy plugs. Slightly cheaper than the Autolites. I know several people who have switched from the Autolites due to rough idle and misfire codes.
