Subject: Transfer Case disengaging/clunking
IP: Logged

Message:
While deer hunting over the weekend, my '98 Dakota 4X4 started "clunking" somewhere in the drive train. While just starting out or driving very slowly, the RPM will increase as if it slips into neutral, then whatever is slipping will reengage with a "clunk" and everything is normal again. After the third time this happened, it seems to be just after using 4WD High and shifting back into 2WD High. Also it was when everything has been sitting for a while and is not warmed up. It has now been 3 days of normal driving (2WD highway stuff)and it hasn't done it again. The truck has 80,000 miles. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help.

are you disengaging 4wd from a stop. on older models (98 included) it is better to disengage from a roll. preferrably with very little gas pedal on. in other words don't shift in and out under no load or full load.

I normally engage 4WD from a stop (I'm usually in need of it at the time) and disengage while underway, after having gotten myself out of whatever trouble I was in. I've had the truck since new and this is the first time I've run into this problem.

i hope it's nothing serious. if you say it's doing the clunk after a disengage, then just try doing it from a roll, with no gas on. then be gentle for a couple more yards. some older ones recomended you back up/ pull forward to engage. (moms old blazer) or something like that. good luck
