i have a question im stumped with. i got a 99 r/t with 41,000 on it. i think it might be spark knock but not sure. i tried looking at past posts but couldnt find too much. i hear a constant ticking noise while under load. at first i thought it might be my injectors, but that wasnt it after holding the rpms at 3000 rpms parked, next i thought it was an exhaust leak at my header collecters, but with the same test, i didnt hear it. it only happens if its under load while driving and about 2 minutes after started up from cold until i shut it off. i noticed there is a light film of oil in the plenum of the beer barrel, so i think the m1 is going to be on the way with in the next few days.performance is good still, just a ticking noise that just started within the last two weeks. will the m1 smooth out idle and fix my problem hopefully? anyone have any advice on what it could be?

Does the ticking change depending on which gear you are in, engine RPM, or vehicle speed?

If not, about how many times per second (or minute) would you guess you hear it?

From what you're saying it sounds like it probably is spark knock. I have a 97 Dakota with a 318 and it does pretty much the same thing. When the truck is cold, the fuel mixture is richer because of the choke and it doesn't ping. After engine warms up and the choke turns off and the mixture leans out, it starts to ping under heavy load.

As an easy test, try putting in higher grade gas for a tank or 2... if the noise goes away then you know that it is spark knock.

If your truck hasn't been tuned up for awhile, a good tune-up helps a bit. Also, sometimes if carbon builds up inside the engine, that will change the compression just enough to cause pinging. Most shops usually have the equipment to help clean out the carbon... anyways, here's just a few ideas to kick around. If it's not any of this stuff, then it may be something mechanical...

i tried like 3 different kind of plugs and it runs best with the factory champions. i tried 3923 and it was rough at idle. i always put in 93 octane gas so im puzzled. my truck runs very good at idle now with the new plugs and cap rotor and mopar performance wires with an msd 6a ignition. but its always under load i get the ticking so it makes me think that it is spark knock.

I posted from work but it looks like it didn't make it. I had the same problem creep up and I actually noticed it only with the power setting on my Micro tuner. Even with 91 octane it would ping. I went back to 87 octane and the 87 program and it went away. Then, it began doing it on 87 soon after. I pulled the plugs and #8 was bad looking like oil was getting to it. #6 wasn't great. I popped off the TB and looked down to find oil on the intake. I changed the plugs and will be pulling the intake to repair it soon.
