I purchased a 2000 Dakota quad cab a couple of weeks back it has the 4.7 and auto. On the tag in the glove compartment it shows to have 3.55 gear.I was just wondering what kind of rpms you guys are turning at 70 mph in OD.I am turning 2300-2400 at 70 which seems a little high for a 3.55 gear.

Hmm...I just changed my '01 4.7 Dakota from 3.55 to 3.9 (for towing) and that's about where I run at 70 mph.

I'm just running the standard 16" wheels and tires.

Sounds like yours might have had a ratio change in the past.

Mike

I bought the truck used from a dealer so anything swapped out was done before I owned it and I would not know anything about the price of the swap. The truck currently has LT235-15 Michelin LTX-MS on it which shuld be close to original. Is their any way to tell the difference in the axle just by the looks of it.

That sure sounds like 3.92's to me. With 3.55 gears, 28.9 inch tires, and auto tranny, you should be turning just over 2000 rpm in overdrive. Sounds like you have 3.92's. If I were you, I'd be happy! Lower gears are the way to go.

You can't really tell from the axle what the gearing is...unless you know abso-poso-lutely that the gearing hasn't been changed, and then you may be able to find a tag on one of the axle tubes (beside the "pumpkin"), or driver's door or glove box that shows the gearing.

One shade-tree mechanic way of getting a feel for what gearing you have is to jack the rearend of the truck up & put it on jackstands, and climb underneath & place a small mark at the bottom of the driveshaft & one of the tires. Then rotate the driveshaft by hand & count the revolutions it takes to rotate the tire one turn. If it is about 3 1/2 turns, you have 3.55 gears. If it is just short of 4, you have 3.92's. And so on, and so forth.

This link will show all available gears for your axle: http://www.ring-pinion.com/a-dodge.html

Hope that helps.

My '01 Dak w/3.92LS turns 2500 rpm at 75mph, consistently. I'm running the stock Goodyears on 16" rims.
