Subject: 4.7 motor knock

Message:
I have a 01 4.7 dakota and the oil pump failed on me. I spent $400 dollars and for the next 3 days at 2 thousand rpm's the motor would knock...sounded like lifters but on the 3rd day i had the have it towed to my house and instead of the $5500 on a new rebiult 4.7 i bought a 95 s-10 blazer with 75,*** miles. I started up the dakota the other day and drove in down the road a little bit. It has no loss of power(i didn't get on it)but it took off just fine...like always...so its not a busted piston or anything really bad a don't think. The problem is prolly a bent rod or maybe valve train...i just don't know but i would hate to be out $5500 when its something little...i think its prolly shot but sense i have a better ride i just want it fixed somewhat for next years show season. I really miss my dakota though but this good dependable vortec v6 is good on gas and it is 1.90 a gallon. I almost forgot about the knock...its really loud at times...kinda like it will be loud for a while and when i let off the gas it will go away for about 2 or 3 seconds and then while come back again. Its in the top left side of the motor thats why i was thinking rod...someone told me valve train noise.

No push rods in the 4.7L. You may have a collapsed valve lash adjuster, which seems to be common for the 4.7L. Chances are though, if you had your oil pump fail you PROBABLY(not prolly)have a bad connecting rod bearing. Unless there is more information than you posted, there is no reason why you would have a damaged piston or anything damaged in the valvetrain.

never did i say it was better than my dakota i miss my dakota though really bad i do remember saying that...it was $4500 and has 75,*** miles. It was cheap better on gas by far...lol...and i had to have a ride to work when my dakota gave up i couldnt wait to put my dakota in the shop for who knows how long. I do know that the 4.7 is SOHC excuse me for my bad typing that D is so close to the S...lol...but you know what instead of wasting my time correcting my spelling and trying to tell me that i said the blazer is better than my dakota when i never once said that i only said it was better on gas and i need that and besides now i can cut the computer out and go carbed. No more stupied ?'s i need help to get my poor dakota back on the road

The valve lash adjusters are in the cylinder head and act kind of like a valve lifter in a push rod engine. To remove one you will need to remove the valve cover and the rocker arm. In order to get the rocker arm out with out removing the cam you will need a "special" Chrysler tool to push down on the valve spring enough to free up the rocker. I found it used on the internet for $60.00. It's a fairly straight foward job. The vlave lash adjuster is only available from Dodge right now.

Like I said earlier though, I'm more inclined to think that you have a lower end problem since you had an oil pump failure. In your case, I would take it to a good garage and have them listen to it to see if they can diagnose it. In fact, take it to a few garage to see if they all agree. Just be sure to not tell them that others have looked at it otherwise they may be influenced.

Worse case if you do need a motor, I've seen a few on Ebay with low miles going for less than $1k.

I think I have a lash adjuster that leaks down overnight. my engine makes a lifter type noise for about 10-15 seconds, only when its been started after sitting for a long while.... I don't remember it doing it in the summer, but I used 10w-30 then and I use 5w-30 now..... my truck is still under warranty, so maybe I will take it in and pitch a fit do they will fix it :-)

You guys may be right...lol...parts like that could possibly be more than the part to start with. What would you guys do...i'm really thinking about a new motor but sense i do have this s-10 blazer its opening up new ideals for the dakota like going 360 carburated. It would also be alot cheaper because its 200 for the cut computer and i have the headers already. The only thing i need is the 360 and a tranny and the new 4.7 installed was 5500 but that was 75,000 mile/3 year warrenty whatever comes first.

how bad is it honestly knocking?? is it knocking scary bad, or just annoyingly bad? I think it may be a rod bearing too, since the oil pump took a crap on you....

Take it to a GOOD HONEST garage and get it diagnosed. Swaping an older motor in to todays highly computer controled cars is a big PITA and isn't usually cost effective! Especially since it seems you have minimal mechanical knowledge(no offense meant). If it needs a motor, look around and find a good used one and find a garage to install it. Most used engines from a junk yard will come with some sort of warranty and you should be able to find a garage to install it for less than $1k.

Freighting an engine usually can be done for around $300. from dock to dock. Not too bad if you find a good deal on the internet. I know this first hand as I've shipped quite a few engines and trannys cross country.

Bottom line, stop speculating and just get it checked out before you go any futher or get rid of the truck all together if you'd rather not be bother with fixing it. In the end when it comes to some thing like engine noises, it takes some one that can actually hear it and look at it to diagnose it. It can not be diagnosed with 100% certainty on a message board. All we can do is try to point in a general direction.

GOOD LUCK!

LOL...i'm a mechanic mostly body work now but im more into older motor with no OHC and no computer all this stuff throws me off. Also, about the noise its loud and annoying and i dont think it would make it to a shop it might not blow up completey but it would tear something up. I found a 4.7 with 30,000 on it at a salvage yard for $2500 but it may only have a 30 day warrenty

I had the exact same issue with a 2001 4.7, i purchased with a rod knock. Only knocked when you first started it until the oil pressure came up or reving above 2000 rmp. Upon driving it to my shop to get the engine overhauled the rod bent, then broke, bent valves and destroyed the block. My advice is do not drive it or run it with the engine noise, my mistake cost me an extra 1000 in parts alone. The cheapest engine block we could find was $500 that was for a "rebuildable core" had to have it bored all new pistons. tow it somewhere and get it fixed. The 4.7 is prone to bottom end problems espically with poor maint.

I have the same knocking problem on my 2001 4.7 Dakota. Starts with the knocking early in the morning. My mechanic found the cam bridge(three of them)fell out. He replaced them and it ran fine for 250 miles. This morning it happened all over again. If this bridge(s) did just fall out again I wonder what would cause this. Any advise would be a big help.
