why would anyone put a 180 T stat in thier truck? does this add ant performance or just keep it cool? Shouldnt a stock one keepit cool?

Do a search. In the last couple of months there has been dozens of posts on this very subject.

The stock one is 195 degrees. That 15 degrees of extra heat makes a big difference on engine performance especially in the summer.

Rob, can you prove that?

Keith, the stock part (195*) works just fine.

I have never yet seen any proof that cooler water temp in our stock trucks makes more power. If I ever run across some viable data, I'll be one of the first to make the swap, since I actually have one sitting on the shelf in the basement.

You need someone to prove that a cooler engine makes more power? Are you also waiting for someone to prove that the earth is round?

Don't confuse fact with assumption; that's what gets many scientists and consumers in trouble.

There is no question that a cooler air charge will produce more power. It's been proven time and again on a variety of engines. It's even been proven with the Dakota R/T. A CAI will certainly improve performance of a stock truck to some extent. So lets set that question aside.

Here's the real question. Does lower coolant temp equate to lower air charge temp? More importantly, does lower coolant temp equate to more power to the pavement?

The bottom line is, has anyone done a before and after dyno test on an essentially stock Dakota? Or drag strip test? Or a G-Tech meter test? If that data exists, I've never seen it. As I said, if I ever see that data - and it shows an improvement - I'll change mine in a heartbeat.

The higher temp serves a couple of purposes, mostly to reduce emissions - which I think is a good thing. Also, there's less cylinder wall wear at higher temps. And yes, there's solid data to back up that statement. Do a goole search and you'll find it.

Your truck is designed to operate at that higher temp. I tried swapping to a 180* once. I didn't notice any performance change, gas mileage went down the tubes, and it ran/idled rough. So I swapped it back to stock. That's why I have one sitting on the shelf.

When anybody makes a claim of imnproved performance, better mileage, etc., your response should always be "Prove it". Don't spend money or make changes based on fuzzy science, hearsay, assumptions, or salesmans claims.

Bob, et. al.,

Bob, I agree with you 100%, BUT,

I made the swap to a 180 for a few reasons.
1. I no longer use the redundant, belt driven clutch/fan on my 4.7. Keeping the operating temp 15 degrees lower helps keep it cool. Thus far, the gauge stays 1/3 the way over, just above the lower hash mark, on my 2001, 4.7, yadda, yadda. Now, removing the belt clutch/fan has been dyno proven, both chasis, and butt.

2. Overall, I think a slightly cooler engine, has a longer working life, all thing being equal, I may be wrong there.

I'm like you Bob, about using proven things, or why waste money, right? That's why I'll never get a 'cat back' on my 4.7. I have nixed the third cat howeever, and it's a little louder.

Incidentally, with my 4.7, and the manual 5speed, I noticed no mileage drop, and my truck still idles smooth as silk, with the 180 t-stat.

I romoved the clutch/fan, BEFORE I did the 180 change, and even with the 195, it didn't run any hotter. I do live in a hot climate, and have my a/c, hence the elec fan on most of the year.

My drive train and mods:
2001, 4.7, homebrew 'true cai' with K&N drop in, ported my 68mm TB, IAT adjuster-turned off usually, 2002 HO intake manifold, 2001 HO cams, 3923 plugs, NO belt clutch/fan, Heater water shut off (keeps a/c MUCH colder, a/c clutch engages less), NO third cat, 5pd manual, LSD rear, 2wd.
Larger Radiator with the trailer towing pack-stock.

Don't forget longer Transmission fluid life as well. I forget, but i saw somewhere, for every 1 degree, you increase your transmission life by certain amount of miles. I think it was on the Ammco transimssion page. Or even APS. Don't remember.

Since, i just had my trans & Torque convertor replaced at only 65k. I am gonna run a cooler stat. $2,300 for a rebuild is just too darn much. Here in Phoenix, my water temps gets to like 220-230 deg. during the summers in rush hour traffic.

The trans fluid, i believe runs thru the radiator then to your trans oil cooler. So, i would rather have cooler water temps.

That's just my 2 cents.
