I've brought it up in the past and I know others have also, regarding the ticking at start up with the 4.7L. In my case with my '00 QC I narrowed it down to one of the hydrualic valve lash adjusters. I've since bought a set of new ones and had planned to replace them soon.

I'm also aware of the tendency of the 4.7L to sludge up EVEN with regualar oil and filter changes. The typical sludging may not normally be a problem if it weren't for the smaller than usual oil ports that the 4.7L has. Because of this(even though I drive highway and change my oil every 3K miles)I decided to flush out my engine before I change the lash adjusters. I chose Auto-RX engine flush because of the high praise it has on this sight and other auto sites.
After 150 miles with the Auto-RX in my crankcase, the lash adjuster ticking is GONE! This means to me that the problem was sludge or carbon blocking an oil port and not a mechanical failure. Time will tell if the problem is really fixed or not, but for now my engine is as quiet at 76K miles as the day I bought it. I still plan on changing the lash adjusters anyway(since I bought them), but atleast now it's not as pressing. Those of you with the same problem may benefit from a good engine desludgeing also. It makes you wonder if the premature oil pump and bearing failures associated with the 4.7L are caused the same way.

Another common problem is the piss poor brakes on these Dakotas. I've always manually adjusted my rear brakes and yet I still get warped rotors and heavy nose dive(just as if the rear brakes weren't working). While looking in to converting to rear discs, I decided one last ditch effort in keeping the drums(and some cash in my pocket). I bought a set of Raybestos semi metallic shoes and replaced the stock shoes. At the same time I deglazed the drums. WOW! What a difference!! For the first time EVER with this truck it actually stops when you slam the brake pedal! Now the rear antilocks actually kick in under hard braking, which is something that my other trucks have always done but NEVER my Dakota. Those of you with the same brake complaints may also want to try this or atleast deglaze the drums and manually adjust the shoes. Just remember, NEVER trust the automatic brake adjusters. They just don't work.

Sorry for the long post, I just thought I would share.

Amsoil - Auto-Rx, engine ticking, rear brakes

figols,

Auto-Rx, www.auto-rx.com

I have recommended Auto-Rx multiple times on this site.

IMHO, it is the best flush on the market.

From my personal knowledge and per their website, Auto-Rx is a synthetic, biodegradable, highly effective, safe metal cleaner. Auto-RX is gentle, slow acting, and thorough. I know many vehicle owners that have used it and no one has reported any problems.

Auto-RX is inert in your oil,it does not negatively affect any aspect of your host oil except to clean and disburse crud to the oil filter. There are no negatives associated with it's use. Auto-RX was developed as an alternative to solvents for a slower non hazardous alternative that does not deplete, but ends up disbursing the crud in a very small form ... small enough to flow by bearings etc.

If anyone decides to use this Auto-RX product (For the record ... I do not sell it) FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS RELIGIOUSLY.

I wish that I sold it ... but it is a proprietary product.

I might have to give auto-Rx a try then! I drained a quart of oil out, and am running marvel mystery oil now... the ticking has quieted down, and the engine seems a little more "snappy".

It also (knock on wood) has stopped my rough idle/near stalling on cold startup! I'm going to keep the marvel in, until my next oil change (in about 1500k) and go from there. I also plan on flusing my engine, on my next oil change. I will be using B-12 Chemtool... I used it on my 3.9L, and it did a good job. If the marvel dosent cure the ticking, I will probably try Auto-Rx...

This is Good, figols, I was just about to post a question about the ticking noise at start up, My 4.7 dak has 80,000 mi on it and does the same thing. It's just what i thought it was, since it goes away as soon as the oil warms up a little, or right after i change the oil. I usally run a quart of MMO with my Mobil 1 and it helps with the ticking for a little while. im definatlly going to try Auto-rx engine flush the next time i change my oil. I also agree with you about the brakes, i wish they had some more balls, espically since i tow alot. I have to have trailer brakes for anything over 2000lbs. But other than that i love my Dakota

I checked out the link that DakotaOwner01 gave and the results are really impressive. I'm optomistic that this stuff will add to the life of my 4.7L. Usually after a fresh oil change the ticking is gone until after the first 200 miles. I'm now at about 750 miles since adding Auto-Rx and the ticking is still gone. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

i was impressed by the guys procedure, and measurements, not just empty claims he documented it well and took measurements every step of the way for a documentable repeatable process for sceptics like me. I am going to run some auto rx through my 99 318 because of this guys work. It is very good.
