is it a reg cab or a club cab dakota?? and is it an auto or manual??

coil, wires, cap and rotor. Along with good plugs, should help a little. what running condition is the engine in? does it run great, or so-so? it might just need a tuneup.
Also a freer-flowing exhaust should bring you a little more MPG...

00 CC Sport Plus 4.7L 4X4 Auto, 3:55 LSD
Flowmaster orig. 40 series (2 chamber) muffler, adjusted tps to .76V, ported TB, home brew intake setup w/K&N filter, more mods to come!!!

I dont mean to be an a-hole but you own a V8. You are going to get $hitty gas milage we all deal with it. I do agree 10MPG sucks I only get 13.5 but what are you going to do. You will spend way more money in mods trying to save a couple bucks in fuel.

A V-8 doesn't necessarily mean lousy mileage. My 89 Grand Marquis with 5.0 gets 18/29, but of course the trans shifts way too soon for it to have any power. My '02 Dak quad 4w drive 4.7 gets 14/19. My friend with the same dak but a 6 cyl gets 14/20. Of course it does depend on which V-8 we are speaking of. Some are thirsty.

The biggest problem I see is some one trying to spend a bunch of money to save a little. Its like when people tell me they drive 15MI to save 4-5 cents a gallon. (YOUR NOT SAVING ANYTHING AFTER THE DRIVE!) Say this guy or anyone else for that matter spends an average of 250.00 on upgrades to save fuel milage. Say, on average he gains 3MPG (being generous here)(roughly 30-35MI per tank) about 2.75 Gallons of fuel at about $2.05 a gallon that is a savings of about $5.50 a tank. It would take almost 45 tanks of fuel to recover the $250.00 they spent on mods. To some people its worth it. I do understand the term spend some to make some. BUt, this isn't exactly what I call a money making investment.

You could change all the fluids over to synthetics. The mileage increase might be 1-2 MPG if your lucky, but you will have better fliuds and won't have to change them as often as dino based oils. It's a win-win situation, the cost of running synthetics is about the same as dino fluids since you don't have to change the as often, plus you might increase your gas mileage at the same time. I have synthetics in my 00 4.7, engine tranny, diff, and get 16-20 MPG, but the 4.7's get better mileage than the 5.2's.

How are your tires? My truck was pulling hard to the right because the front tires were cupped real bad and the mileage went down because of the extra drag. Swapped the rear tires to the front, pulling is gone and the mileage is back up there.

How's your fan clutch? If it's locked up (bad) it will put additional drag on the engine.

K&N clean? I have to wash/oil my filter every 10-15K because the thing gets plugged up with dirt.

Good luck with the mileage,

Welcome to the early world of 5.2L dakotas. I have a 92 4x4 clubcab with 3.90 gears and an auto.Around town 10 is the norm ...always has been and I suspect always will be. Does considerable better on the hiway but...I did the K&N,replace the cat conv, plugs, wires, oils and now with 155K it still gets 10mpg. I feel your pain, but damn it still tickles me when I put my foot to the floor...Hard to give up a good thing for the price of gas

I have a 4.7 V8 with the 5 speed, and after the K&N FIPK, keeping the RPM at 2000-2500 @ most, and using mid-grade gas, I average 19 mpg. Last month I managed to hit 24 mpg on one long trip.
Then again, I drive mostly on the interstates.

The mpg on my '99 5.2 suddenly dropped from 16+ to about 13. I took it in and had the plenum gasket replaced and now the mpg is back up where it belongs.

That may not be the solution to your problem, but it took care of mine.

I get 13.5 on my 99 318 when it was new I was getting 14. I imagine that milage goes down as your engine gets older and crud builds up. Go to auto-rx.com and check out their engine cleaner. Its good stuff from what I can tell. I noticed some varnishing on my engine last time I had the head covers off so I am gonna do a run of it.
