Subject: A/C whine/whistle. Fan clutch issue?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I am somewhat new to my 2000 Dakota V8 4.7 and this forum. While I have searched for answers on the board, I am not finding posts about the exact same problem that I am experiencing.

When I turned the engine off, I would hear a whine noise from inside the center of the dash, or maybe from the back of the engine area, like the A/C pressure lines were balancing. The whine got bad enough that it became a very loud high pitch whistle, lasting 5-10 seconds or more after shut down. At its peak, it would occasionally make the noise even while at idle.

It did not matter if the A/C on or off, which air flow vents were selected, or what fan speed was selected. Outside temperature did not seem to make a difference either, though this problem did being in the summer, which is only 70-80 degrees here.

The mechanic said the auxiliary fan seemed bad and it blew a fusible link, so they replaced both. For two months the problem went away but it has started up again. (Temps are now in the 50s and 60s at most.) The auxiliary fan sounds like it’s still working, but another tech said they thought my main fan was not spinning very fast at idle and a new fan clutch may be needed.

Questions:
Do I have serious A/C problems that require an A/C system specialist?
Or, is a new fan clutch an appropriate item to replace next, hoping to solve the problem?
If so, how much should I pay for the part, and do I need OEM?
Is it a DIY project for someone who can do oil changes and disk brakes?
What shop or repair manual should I get?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Mark,

Not sure about the whine,

but I do know for sure, that you don't even
need the belt driven fan clutch, and the belt driven fan. I got rid of mine long ago on my 2001, 4.7, and it never gets to 1/2 way on the gauge.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply!

My fan does seem to move slowly. The engine temperature has not been a problem, but the theory was that the cooling system is not running as efficient as possible, causing the A/C system to have problems balancing high and low pressure in the lines at shut down?

The noisr is normal but it should not be constant. The clutch is supposed to engage when the engine reaches a certain temp and needs the fan. I don't hear it on my '00 because I got rid of the clutch fan about 6 years ago. Runs fine on just the electric fan.
