I saw some past posts about installing Hurst shifters with both positive and negative results.

I thought I would post my experiences for the rest of you.

The factory shifter worked well but the long throws were tiresome, and if I had a soda bottle or large cup in my factory cup holder every shift into 2nd, 4th, or Reverse would hit the bottle or cup. Well this got on my nerves really fast when I wasn’t thinking and pulled out of the local gas station and it hit the large Styrofoam cup of coffee cracking it down the side so I started searching for a solution.

So I started my search for a short through shifter for my truck. After searching all the boards and websites I settled on the Hurst Competition Plus shifter # 391-0155

The shifter states it will fit 1994-2000 Dakota 4.7L-5.9L, five-speed, with the NV3500 transmissions. I knew that the transmission was changed a little bit in 2001 so I knew I would need to build a spacer to ensure proper alignment of the shifter ball with the socket in the transmission.

I ordered it from Summit Racing catalog# HUU-3910155 for $169.95 figuring if it didn’t fit I would send it back.

After receiving it 2 days later I did some careful measuring and comparing to the stock unit I determined the total space I needed to make up was 23/64” I subtracted 3/32” to account for 2 pieces of 1/16” paper gasket material being compressed to 3/64 each. And made a aluminum spacer the same size and shape as the included gasket 17/64” thick

It bolted right in using the bolts from the factory shifter. The bottom boot needed modified to fit over the higher shift tower and the console boot needed replaced with a new leather one to accommodate the new shifter handle. It has plenty of clearance with the dash, and has a throw from 3rd – 4th of about 4"

Yep, I added a Hurst Shifter to my dakota as well. And it works great as long as you space the shifter up on '01+ dakotas. I can now catch a chirp outa 4th gear :)
