Subject: another question for amsoil man
IP: Logged

Message:
I am using amsoil 5w30 synthetic in my 02 quad cab, 4.7litre. I bought the oil because alot of people recommended it. But, one question. The claim is to save money because of the 25,000 mile change intervals. Mind you I am not going to even let it get close to that. But if someone would take it to 25,000 mile before they change it and for some reason something should happen to the motor and they say if is related to the oil not being changed regularly does that person have a leg to stand on when it is still under warranty and they will not honor the warranty because of the change intervals. Right now I got 3000 miles on the oil and it still looks and feels like I just put it in. I know this sounds wasteful but I am going to have to change it soon.

Amsoil Extended Drain, Amzoil Synthetic Oil

Message:

I try to be very clear when talking about extended drains. 10,000 mile oil change is absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain "ideal" conditions, but please read further for additional information. But the KEY here is that --- The 3,000 mile recommendation is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.

Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 32 years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST, changing the filter every six months).

However, the 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of the bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.

***** READ THIS PLEASE EVERYONE *****

Under a combination of city and highway circumstances, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 or 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation. It reads exactly that way on the back of every bottle (If your owners manual states 3k miles , then you can change at 9k, and if your owners manual states 5k then 12-15k changes would be alright based on driving habits ... the harder you drive, the sooner the change). Proper filtration is also very important. AMSOIL SDF Oil Filters must be changed at least every 6 months regardless of miles driven.

Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.

Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.

Notice: For drain interval beyond 3x manufacturers recommendations ...
... especially the 25k change ...
Regular oil analysis is recommended for establishing drain intervals.

AMSOIL --- 32 years of manufacturing oil and mountains of data and tests make these clains possible.

Amsoil Extended Drain, Amzoil Oil Analysis
IP: Logged

The 25,000 mile extended oil change interval and oil analysis.

What is Oil Analysis?

Oil analysis involves sampling and analyzing oil for various properties and materials to monitor wear and contamination in an engine, transmission or hydraulic system. Sampling and analyzing on a regular basis establishes a baseline of normal wear and can help indicate when abnormal wear or contamination is occurring.

Oil analysis works like this. Oil that has been inside any moving mechanical apparatus for a period of time reflects the exact condition of that assembly. Oil is in contact with engine or mechanical components as wear metallic trace particles enter the oil. These particles are so small they remain in suspension. Many products of the combustion process also will become trapped in the circulating oil. The oil becomes a working history of the machine.

Particles caused by normal wear and operation will mix with the oil. Any externally caused contamination also enters the oil. By identifying and measuring these impurities, you get an indication of the rate of wear and of any excessive contamination. An oil analysis also will suggest methods to reduce accelerated wear and contamination.

The typical oil analysis tests for the presence of a number of different materials to determine sources of wear, find dirt and other contamination, and even check for the use of appropriate lubricants.

Oil analysis can detect: Fuel dilution of lubrication oil, Dirt contamination in the oil, Antifreeze in the oil, Excessive bearing wear, Misapplication of lubricants.

Some wear is normal, but abnormal levels of a particular material can give an early warning of impending problems and possibly prevent a major breakdown.

Early detection can: Reduce repair bills, Reduce catastrophic failures, Increase machinery life, Reduce non-scheduled downtime.

Early detection with oil analysis can allow for corrective action such as repairing an air intake leak before major damage occurs. Probably one of the major advantages of an oil analysis program is being able to anticipate problems and schedule repair work to avoid downtime during a critical time of use.

Another purpose of oil analysis is to provide a means of predicting possible impending failure without dismantling the equipment. A person can "look inside" an engine, transmission or hydraulic systems without taking it apart.

Once you order the "sampling kit" follow the directions very close so as to NOT contaminate the sample. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

I could go on-and-on about the merits and benefits of oil analysis. Entire phamplets have been written on the subject. However, the proper lab will do the dirty work and provide you with a "bottom line" interpretation.

Amsoil Extended Drain, Amzoil Oil Analysis

Cost and Convenience of Oil Analysis:

The cost of an oil analysis will vary according to the laboratory and extent of the analysis. Typical charges are $10 to $30 per analysis. The expense easily can be justified if it alerts the owner of a major problem that can be corrected and will help prevent downtime when the vehicle or machine is needed.

Several companies have developed oil analysis kits that make oil analysis convenient. These kits include the sample bottles, suction pump and tubing, and possibly a pre-addressed, postage-paid mailing container.

The reasonable cost and convenience of oil analysis for use makes it another management tool that should be considered by anyone wanting to do preventive maintenance.

As I stated earlier ... You should use a lab that is familiar with the additive chemstry of the oil you are using. For instance ... testing Amsoil, I'd use Oil Analyzers, Inc., and for all you Mobil1 users, AV Lube. I think you will get more accurate data on oxidation, nitration, TBN, etc., etc., if you do this. Also, Blackstone Labs & Dyson Analysis are two very good oil analysis companies and you can also check the Yellow Pages for someone nearby.

Amsoil Extended Drain, Amzoil New Vehicle Warranty
IP: Logged

Message:

Warranty Laws

Could using Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils void your new vehicle warranty?

Absolutely not. Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain grades and American Petroleum Institute (API) "minimum" service requirements. Whether the motor oil is petroleum based or synthetic will not affect warranty coverage.

The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets the requirements and was not the cause of the failure. Amsoil exceeds these requirements and has never been deemed the cause of an engines failure.

Even so, Amsoil has its own limited warranty, protecting you even further. In addition, the federally mandated Magnuson-Moss Act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.

If a car dealership, service center or other business states that using Amsoil will void your new vehicle warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to Amsoil Technical Services (AMSOIL Inc., AMSOIL Bldg, Superior, WI 54880). If the business won't provide the statement in writing send Amsoil Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the specific statement was. Amsoil will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence.

Could your new vehicle warranty be voided if you don't change your oil according to the manufacturers recommended change intervals, --- such as when using Amsoil?

Absolutely not. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils are guaranteed to run 25,000 miles to 35,000 miles (Series 2000 Severe Service 0w-30 oil) or one year in mechanically sound engines, providing of course, that the oil is kept free of contaminants by changing the oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendation or when using an Amsoil Super Duty Oil Filter (SDF) changing the filter at 6 months or 12,500 miles (for gasoline engines), whichever comes first.

If using the Amsoil Dual-Remote or Dual-Gard By-Pass Filtration unit then the oil and By-Pass filter is changed as indicated by oil analysis testing. Amsoil coined the phrase "extended drain interval" and it has been validated by over 30 years of industry testing and tens of thousands of motorists and millions of over-the-road miles.

Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils provide extended drain performance because they don't break down in heat like conventional motor oils do. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils don't form performance-robbing deposits, and don't volatize (burn off), which alters viscosity and increases oil consumption.

Finally, Amsoil's superior additive package, a key element in the oil's ability to function, holds up under engine stresses, remaining serviceable for the full 25,000 to 35,000 miles, or indefinitely when Amsoil By-Pass Filtration and oil analysis is used.

Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular oil was the cause of an engine failure --- make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a clean bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. The oil can then be sent to two independent testing labs for analysis (labs are located throughout the country and I have listed them here before under "Oil Analysis").

Remember, an informed consumer is THE BEST defense against being taken advantage of by a vehicle dealership or service center.

Amsoil Extended Drain, Amzoil Lubrication Warranty
IP: Logged

Message:

FYI - Additional WARRANTY Information

First and foremost, there is no way for the dealer to test to see what brand of lubricant you are using --- they will only want to see maintenance records to see that maintenance was performed on a timely basis. If this is a concern, this can be accomplished by keeping sales receipts of your purchases and taking photos of your odometer.

Warranty issues can be a pain in the butt even if the dealer has performed all maintenance with OEM supplies. For the record, I am posting Amsoil's recently revised Limited Warranty information in it's entirety below.

(Note: I purchase and use Amsoil lubricants and filters EXCLUSIVELY and take the products to a local "Quickie Lube", or a friendly mechanic or garage, and let them perform the change. They charge a "nominal fee" for this service since I provide the lubricants and filters --- similar to a corking fee when you bring your own bottle "BYOB" of wine, or your own beer, to a restaurant.)
