Subject: Another Oil Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been using Mobil 1 synhthetic routinely for 45,000 miles. Was wondering if it is a bad idea to switch to conventional motor oil. I am low on funds right now and synthetic is a bit expensive. Was thinking of switching over to mobil conventional oil.

Thanks

Joe

Maybe I can help.

Of the following ... look around for what is on sale.

1)Texaco Havoline
... or Chevron ... since they are the same now
2) Pennzoil

I have seen all of the above on sale for a little as 69 cents per qt., usually $1 +/-.

Choose an oil with oil with a high Total Base Number "TBN". When comparing non-synthetic "dino" oils ... Chevron and Texaco Havoline oils have TBNs somewhat higher than much of the competition.

P.S. Use a good filter. The best "cheap" filter is Walmart's SuperTech, sometimes available for approximately $2.

Remember, these "dino" oils that I mentioned above should be changed often. How much are you really saving if you use these oils and change them 4 times as often as you would change Amsoil?

Amsoil is a 100% TRUE Synthetic Motor Oil and formulated for extended drains.

Oh yes, to answer the rest of your question ... It will cause no harm to your engine to switch from synthetic to a "good" dino ... and yes, you can use the non-Mobil1 ... SAE Mobil ... but it is $2 plus per quart and I don't believe that it is any better than Texaco Havoline, Chevron, or Pennzoil at 1/2 the price.
