Message:
I am a new owner of a 02 Dakota 4.7L RC and have had it about 2 months now. I already made a CAI, ported my own TB moved the IAT, and set the TPS at .78V, I finnaly got my HO cams today from KRC and am haveing trouble finding anywhere to install them. I live in NW Indiana and have tried all the local Dealers and shops and no one will do it and and those who will want over $600 for install. Can anyone help me with suggestions. Also KRC failed to send me a wedge tool with my cams, Can anyone give me the specs on the tools size so I can make one. I would try the install myself but have never done such a maj. mod any am a little scared of breaking my truck. Thanks

Tool is 7/16" thick, but I think you could use 3/4" stock if that's what you have. 5" long, 1 1/2" wide, tapers to 7/8" over the last 3 5/8" approx. Make two to do both sides at once and attach a string. Make sure cams are different lengths before you start, one is commonly shipped incorrectly. Zip tie the chain to the gears so you don't jump a tooth. Be careful not to stress the pin that indexes the gear to the cam when bolting it on. Haven't checked out rgathrite's site yet; but several of the guys here have documented this swap pretty well with pictures, I think Graphite Dak did a good write up on it. Research it a bit here to see if you'd feel comfortable doing it. The toughest part is the valve cover R&R.

First, read the instructions carefully more than once. Make sure you understand and can visualize every step of the instructions. Before starting, prepare a good place to do the swap, one where you may have to leave your truck overnight if you have to. An experienced mechanic can do the swap in 3-4 hours but, if you're new to this engine and vehicle, you'll have to be careful, deliberate and slow, to double check the instructions and you're work. You'll also have to keep track of all the little parts you remove. I used a workbench and empty egg cartons that I labeled with a sharpie marker. The parts stay in the individual egg recesses and it keeps them separated. Make sure you have clean oil for the reassembly as well as a torque wrench and all of the proper tools for the job.
Important tips! You don't need the special spanner wrench. Remove the cam cover that doesn't require you to take the battery out first, that way you can use the starter to jog the engine to the proper timing marks first. DON'T let the wedge tool slip out so, check them periodically during the procedure but, don't over wedge them either. Make sure you install the sprockets back on the cams completely ( that means the dowel pins totally engaged )before torquing them down to spec. Keep an eye out for cam follwers slipping out of place and torque things strictly in sequence and gradually. Good luck!!

RE: Stock HO in QC??

Message:
Guys can someone help me out here? I just brought in my new '04 QC 4.7L in for the first oil change at the dealer, (Also in to finish the install on security system but that's another story) and the Technician said that my truck has the HO set up in it??? I asked him how does he know he says just how the throttle body looks and the resonator looks. The resonator says 4.7L Magnum, there's no HO there. Aside from that he said he's never seen a Dakota with the 17x9 chrome rims on it, my truck is the only he's ever seen that came stock that way. The truck is a gloss black with the chrome package on it (gas cap, step bar, muffler tip, front grill and bumpers). It's a very hot looking truck that's why I bought it. The technician also said just driving the truck around in the parking lot there was a significant difference in torque from the other trucks with the 4.7L. This guy also owns a Dakota with the V8. Is there any way to verify what this guy is saying or he's just an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about. I would be more inclided to say he does know what he's talking about.

Sounds like an idiot to me; same throttle body for HO or regular 4.7, right ? Do you have 3.92 gears ? That could make yours feel quicker than his.

Same throttle body for H.O. or regular...I guess that's what I read in some of the forums. The salesman told be the truck had 3.92 gears but he wasn't really sure. I day I opened the glove compartment and it said the truck has 3.55's. Now I don't know if that's what the truck originally had. Is there some way Dodge can tell you the history on whats been done to a truck by the VIN number? If the RPM is about 1600 at about 65 MPH could that be an indication what gear i have? I would be really surprised if the engine speed should run any slower at highway speeds if it doesn't have 3.55's, so I'm assuming it does have 3.55's. Am I off track here?

No, from that info I would guess you probably do have 3.55 gears. Other things that could make your truck quicker could be lighter weight, and some 4.7s come with more spark advance than others.

Hurricane Frances has had us royally screwed up this past week. Call Marty today if you are having any issues. Miller SPX has had the wedge tools on galactic backorder for months but we'll see what we can do.

well I did the install Mon. took about 6 hrs or so
1st try I must have knocked off one of the Lifters, because I had a metal ticking, so I opened it back up and put it back on and started just fine and is still running strong. The power is very noticable and nice it really worked well with my other mods. Thanks for the help.

I got a Gtech from a friend to give my truck a test finnally after the cams. I have a 02 RC 4.7L auto 3.55 open rear (not for long) with a homemade intake and a self ported TB, moved the AIT, and set the TPS at .78V\

It says that I run the 1/4 mile in 15.5s at 89MPH
and 0-60 in 7.2s now I know the these things arent perfect but it was the best I could find, Do these times seem right? I live in NW Indiana and the Temp was 78 outside. Also I had to baby it off the start to avoid wheel spin. any thoughts or comments would be great.

Here is a photo of the lifter followers that you don't want to slip out of position.

You can find all of my pics on my site here: http://www.paysonarizona.net/

I have photos and write ups on there of pretty much all of my mods including the cam swap and TB porting. Just go into the section named My Projects to find them.
