Subject: stripped caliper pins

Both bolt holes were stripped for the caliper mounting pins on BOTH sides! Got the two on the pilot's side cleaned and re-inserted. The two on the passenger side are toast. I checked them to be M10 x 1.25 and tapped them this way. OOPS! When I went to Advanced Auto, they sold me 3/8 X
16??? What are these bolts supposed to be sized at and does anybody sell an oversized(thread) bolt or is a heli coil my only answer? Any help is appreciated as I need this truck back on the broken asphalt here in Ohio ASAP. BTW, I've got new rotors, calipers, and pads since the old ones were shot(135K - '93 5.2 4WD DAK); the pads on the passenger side had eaten up at an angle.

well, your right about the caliper pins being 3/8'ths pretty much helicoil is your only option, you dont have enough metal left to just tap it, and to my knowledge no one sells an oversized selftapper for our trucks yet, i know for sure advance and its affiliates do not, i just tapped and helicoiled mine seems to be doing fine, dont get any kind of sounds or anything even at 100+

I just fell into this abyss myself...cheap Dodge parts!!! I've stripped my share of bolts in my day, but not the threads in an important part as a spindle. Never another Dodge!. Ive already replaced rotors and ball joints at 24K. Both of the stock calipers actually wore-through the wear surface to a rough/rusty pot metal; I've been doing brakes for 35 years and never saw anything as rediculous as this.
The caliper bolts stripped during a normal reinstall. I was dumbfounded. Now what?
Anyway, I researched the fix on this site. They suggested the Helicoil M9 X 1.25. That information was correct. I drilled out the stripped hole with a 3/8" drill (holding my breath as there was only about a mm thickness left of metal on the one side of the hole). The thread insert worked as described and I used new (non-Dodge) caliper bolts & loctite to ensure the threads were optimal ans stayed in place. I won't be surprised if the hole cracks or the pin loosenes. I think I'll just dump the truck on a Ford if that happens. I never had any of this poor quality-related trouble on the Fords I've been driving fot the last 10 years. Good luck!

p.s. ...in my research, I did find an oversized threaded self-tapping caliper thread bolt available under a couple of different companies. One was by the Help! company that makes all of those universal-fix door knob replacements parts and the like. Search for them on the web; they have a catalog in the Auto Zone stores next to their display. You will probably have to order them however (at like $12/each). They also said on this site not to use these unless you are dumping the truck and they are sort of a one-time deal; not to be removed and reinserted next-time. Short of this; it's new spindle time and back to the same junk at a huge cost...Bob
