Hi All, Just installed IAS on my 2000 Durango 5.9, and went for a test drive. This is a comparasion vs. stock shocks with 65k on them.

All i have to say is these shocks are incredible. I took them over the same washboard roads where my OEM shocks would upset the vehicle. The Elderbrock took these like they were tiny little bumps (wow).

Took them over Railroad Tracks where OEM's would Upset my truck. Elderbrock tamed those too.

Those highway turns with expansion joints where your rear end all of a sudden flys out. Elderbrock tamed these too. Just a tiny bit of axle walk. Not like the OEM's where it seems like your gonna lose control.

Curves, Less lean.

Braking, Nose doesn't dive nearly as much.

Washboard dirt road. It seems like they weren't even there. Ok, they were there but. Elderbrock handled them darn well compared to OEM.

Harshness: Well, i don't think so. These shocks are kinda funny. On smooth roads, they are firmer than stock. However, as soon as a bump or choppiness on poor pavement occurs, these shocks soak them up. Then firms back up when smooth roads come back.

I would have to say, these are worth the investment if you love your truck. I plan on driving my piece till the wheels fall off. :)

I've been looking to replace the stock shocks on my 04, and everything I've read tells me Edelbrock IAS are the best. How much did you pay?

Nick, I have an '04 DC QC with under 2k. I find that the truck hits bumps sometimes funny. The truck came with 17x9 wheels and have 275 60 17 tires. Do you think the shocks that come with the truck are just junk?

Fasty, How much clearance did you have between tail pipe and shock boot? I have an 04 QC 4x4 w/ 1 in 2 out dual exhaust. I only have about 1/2" clearence between the passenger side rear shock body (stock) and one of the tail pipes. Will the AIS shocks fit or will I melt the boot? (I know they mount boot down.)
Thanks

Clybon:

It's usually the case that any aftermarket shock is going to be better than the OE shock. After 7500 miles on my 04 Reg Cab, my shocks are starting to, and it's hard to describe this, reverberate up and down after they take a bump. I'll go over a bump, and for a second afterwards, the shock'll bounce very quickly up and down. So junk? Basically yeah. If I put on new shocks, I'm going with Edelbrock, even though they're the most expensive around. But that's a big "if" because after 7500 miles, I get the feeling that the OE shocks aren't the only thing that's junk on this truck. I might be trading it in within the year, and if that's the case, I'm not putting any money into the truck.

roaddog,

I don't know about your clearance issue, my tail pipe is stock, so the shock boot is no where near the pipe.

Keep in mind, that your shock but can be adjusted. What i mean by this is that you had raise them as high as you want or low as you want. Thus, getting close to your pipes are not an issue with the adjustable boots.

I'll "second" fastyz400's IAS comments. I've had a set on my '01 RC 4.7 5-spd for about 6 months, and they really are "cake-and-eat-it-too" when it comes to ride AND handling. Mine were $65 each at a local speed shop.

Fasty, how do you adjust the shocks? Is this a Dakota thing or an IAS thig? I'm new to Dakotas.

I put the IAS's on my 02/QC/AWD about 2 years ago. The shocks are a definite improvement over stock, as others have said above. They control the rate of dive and lean such that the bump axle hop and brake anti-lock activation are minimized.

Be aware though, that the shocks minimize some of the Dakota handling idiosyncracies, not eliminate them. I still have the axle hop and brake problems, but less of them.

Also note that shocks have little to no affect on the _amount_ of corner lean or brake dive, rather they control the _rate_ of the lean and dive.

Now, as to whether another shock would do the same job,,, possibility. But I didn't want to spend the money on a cheaper solution, only to find that it wasn't good enough, then want to do the IAS's anyway.

Roaddog,

Not the shocks themselves but the Shock boot, kinda like stockings, you can pull them all the way up to your balls, or you can leave them by your ankles. If, you leave them by your ankles, you get more grip when your bent over at the dealer. lol

Don't these shocks mount "boot down"? If so the amount of boot slid onto the shock body would make no difference.

roaddog,

Yes, they do mount boot down. Keep in mind since my truck is not lifted, when you install the shocks, they compress once you lower your vehicle. So, if you don't pull them up a bit, they will look like one of the fat ladies with fat rolls around her ankle. lol

I`ve had Bilsteins,KYBs,and tokicos. They are a great improvement over stock. Last year, i was ready to buy a set of Bilsteins for my truck, but on the last second i decided in favor of the IAS Edelbrock. Oh my God, Am i happy? The IASs are absolutely awesome. They are very firm on the smooth, i`d say around 85 to 90% of the hardness of the bilsteins, but when it gets to irregular surfaces, it becames incredible absorbing, unlike the others that now, i consider too harsh. This is the major difference from the IASs and the traditional high performance shocks It offers the best of both worlds and i strongly recomend them.
