Subject: 273 Magnum?

This is an idea i have been kicking around for a while. I was wondering if it would be posible to put all the 318 magnum trimmings on a 273 block (heads, intake, computer system).

this is probably a stupid idea as your giving up 45 cubic inches, but the 273 was always a much more free reving engine, and i wonder how its gas mileage would be.

I have a 273 dart, with no mods, and that thing revs so quick it makes my 2003 dakota seam like a slug to rev up.

would definetly be a one of a kind project ;)

Be sure to find a solid lifter, flat top piston 273 to use. I had one in a Barracuda years ago and can atest to the free reving quality of that engine. Mileage probably won't change all that much unless you custom flash the PCM, or use a slightly smaller injector...

Dealing with the 3.63 bore is tight even for the 1.88 valve 360 LA heads, so with the Magnums, you'll probably need to notch the cylinders, but it'll work. It's even been done with 2.02 intake valve 360 heads. Using the MPI will help compensate some for the loss of some low-end power inherent when going to hi-flow heads, but hang on when it winds up!

why not get a 340 unstead of a 273, take advantage of the bigger bore, still high revving

I wasnt sure if the Magnum heads/intake/computer would work with the 340 block, but if it did, that would be one hot engine!

I read something about having to block off the oiling passage in the block that oils the "shaft rockers" cause the magnum engines oil through the push rods.

Tobad chrystler never made aluminum small blocks, so we could get a weight savings as well. It sounded like the 273 at one point was planned in a aluminum version.

Some of those 273's would really kick ass. In the mid-1960's, sports car racer Bob Tullius ran the first Tran-Am races in a Dodge Dart 273 with two 4 barrels. He won a few early events before Ford determined the Mustangs were getting embarrassed too much.

Why not get a 340? Ummm, have you priced a 340 block lately? Besides, he has a 273, and that's what he wants to build.
As for blocking the oil passages, this is pretty much a non-issue. Use Magnum cylinder head gaskets, as they have no oil passage openings. This effectively seals them off.
