Sounds swwwweeeeeeettttttt. I have an auto trans, so it is hard to get that down shift sound like when you down shift a manual, but over all very happy with the sound. It wasn't that hard of a mod either. Took about 1.5-2 hours to do and that was in the rain too. My girlfriend likes it as well. My butt dyno isn't the best (I was looking more for sound), but she said it felt "quicker" than before. Hell her smile is bigger than mine, when I crank it up and get on it (talking about the truck, not the girlfriend...lol).

I don't know if this is a good comparision or not, but I went for a test drive on the interstate, to check out what it sounded like on the highway, and as I was turning to get on the highway, a newer Pontiac Sunfire was turning with me, he got about a length to a length and a half in front of me, that's when I punched it, right about the same time he down shifted and punched it too. I caught up to him and we were nose to nose when my speed limiter kicked in at around 96, which sucked. I think over all that wasn't too bad for a 4300 lbs truck with an auto trans being able to do that. This is with a QC 4.7 mind you. The only thing I've done to the truck is a K&N drop in filter, and now the Thrush glasspack (28"). Of course there will be more mods. Laters

For some reason, the autos, CC, or QC, come with that 96mph limiter. My 01, 5spd manual, QC, has the 117! Which is RAREly ever used of course ;-(

Did you use band clamps or standard muffler clamps?

Well here's how I did it. I took the Thrush and cut with a hack saw on both ends of it, so it looked like this () I then took the bands off of the OEM muffler, they were only spot weilded and with a bit of wiggling they came right off, so I reused them. Seems to work fine, the bands tightened right down and the pipe didn't move after I tightened them. So I called it good. With cutting the ends of the piping of the Thrush, and reusing the bands from the old muffler I could see them tighting, cause the "gap" is gone that I created with the hacksaw.

I'm going to try the Thrush also. I like bolt-on mods that I can remove easily if I don't like 'em. The glasspack and 2 cheap clamps was $32 shipped from Summit. Unfortunately it won't get to me before the weekend, so I will have to wait until the weekend after...

Hey, I was just wondering which Glasspack you used. Was it a 2.5" x 28"?

Thanks,
Tom

JB, 1.5-2 hours? Did you have trouble getting the muffler off, or was it just lying in the rain and muck?

Quadra, yes, it should be the 2.5/28". Part number was 24214.

Thrush, by band clamps do you mean actual band clamps, like to make 2 pipes of the same OD mate up, or are you considering the exhaust U-bolt clamps to be band clamps?

Lurkin, how did you know I was doing the job in the rain, and having to watch my two sons in the process as well. you live in ABQ too?

Quadra, Lurkin is right about the info on the Thrush.

The only thing I've noticed is it gets a "little" droney sounding at 30 MPH. Also it is louder in the drivers seat then anywhere else in the truck. Very strange, but doesn't bother me at all. Also at 75-85 the power is smooth, I've done a crap load of traveling in mine, and I cruise at 75-85, and the truck always seemed like it was "working" more then it should be, now everything seems really smooth. Could be wishful thinking, but I really don't think so, cause the girlfriend drove the truck and I didn't say anything to her about the "power smoothnes" at cruising speed, and when she got home she said something to me about it...

Did not use U-bolt type clamps, just reused the "bands" that were on the stock muffler, plus the Thrush ends are slightly bigger then the stock pipes, that way they fit over the stock pipes. You insert the stock pipes into the ends of the glasspack.

Very easy to do, I've never touched the exhaust of any vehicle that I've owned and this was as easy as changing engine oil, or changing a flat tire. Very easy mod to do, and cheap to, less then 40 bucks depending on where you get the glasspack from. My local NAPA was the only place that had the Thrush, and it cost me 35 bucks.

I plan on taking some pics, and I'll post them on OFOTO, but how do I link them so people can see them on the forums? Do I just put the web address in the body of one of my posts?

The clamps on my 02 are U-bolts, double checked 'em the other day.

Lurkin,

Got that glasspack on yet? I found a place to cut my 3rd cat out, but they wanted $60 to do it.

I said no thanks. Just for a cut, remove a clamp, and a piece of pipe, that may require a small bend?

Let me know how it sounds, and please drop me an e-mail.

Todd

Just got the glasspack on today. For those of you that have had your Dakota a while, a word of warning. I ended up having to have a shop heat up the stock muffler necks in order to get it out. The crimp of the muffler clamps was too tight to pull the pipes off.

I wanted the stock muffler out in as good a shape as possible just in case I didn't like the glasspack. Well they got it off, but the necks are all "bored" out from the heat. I may be able to cut the ends and make it work again, but who knows.

Now, as for the sound, it definitely has a agressive V8 rumble to it. But it may be a bit louder then I wanted for my daily driver, and I have noticed a drone at around 2K (hiway speed...). It also seems to drown out my sub. I will run it for awhile and see if it grows on me.

Oh yeah, both bolts on the stock front muffler clamp twisted the u-bolt rod right off. The back clamp came off as it should have.

Todd, I don't think you are going to get a much better deal then that. Shop time costs $50-60 an hour for a reasonable mechanic and their shop. It cost me $60 to get my muffler off and the glasspack put on.

Besides, I'd still be concerned about a visual check during inspection.

I have to admit that I love the sound at idle, and when I romp on it. What I'm not sure about is the cruise noise level. When I'm on the highway at 65-70 mph, then let off, "the silence is deafening...".

But I am going to keep it on for a while (as the stock muffler is not usable any longer) and see. What I'm a bit miffed over is that I ended up spending $92 for the glasspack, clamps, and shop time to remove the stock muffler. As I said above, my stock muffler had muffler clamps (not bands) that crimped the pipe and made removal require a torch to stretch the necks.

I checked with a local shop for the cost of buying and installing a Flowmaster or Magnaflow, and found out that was $90-100. So my "cheap" solution just cost as much as a real muffler. Oh well, it's a learning experience, right?!

One last note, the glasspack is actually leaking some where it connects to the cat pipe due to the offsets of the stock muffler (about 3.5"). This is also something I hadn't checked on before. The cost to weld the glasspack on is $20. But I am not going to weld a glasspack on. If a weld is required, I'll swap something else on first.

By the way, my 5 year old thought the sound was "really cool", my 8 year old thought it now sounded like a diesel. I had to punish the 8 year old... :-)

Here is a sound clip of Custom Glass Packs available at any Quality muffler shop. They come in several lenghts from 12" to 30". I went with 2 22" packs that come into a super single after the glass packs (every thing before them is true duals, hence 2 of them).

Sound Clip #1

Sound Clip #2

My recording equipment really sux, so ignore the excess distortion.

Time to revive the dead! Post, that is. Today, the glasspack came off, and a Magnaflow went into it's place.

The hiway drone, and some sort of "drowning exhaust" sound at around 1500 rpm was driving me nuts. I replaced the pack with a Magnaflow 12256.

Now, after a couple hundred dollars, it sounds quite a bit like stock! It may sound quiet since I've gotten used to the glasspack for 6+ weeks, but who knows. The exhaust isn't competing with the sub any longer.

My first mod where I wished I'd just left it stock.
