Subject: fuel pump opions for 4.7 - 01 Dak QC
IP: Logged

It seems that the fuel filter or pump is my problem at starting my 01 Dak. The truck runs great once started but is taking a lot of cranking to catch. I'm going to drop the tank and check the sock filter. I bought the presure reg filter set and a new sock, but would perfer an alternitive system if I have to replace the oem stuff. Any body doing something different? Brands and part#'s would be appreciated. Thanks Gator

Is there any special reason why you wouldn't take it in for warranty?

My first guess at the problem would be a faulty fuel injector that bleeds your fuel pressure down after you turn it off. Does it do the same thing if you turn the ignition switch to on for a few seconds before trying to crank it over?

Dunner I have tried wating and then cranking to get good fuel pressure so I think the injector leak is out. I also would crank then wait and it seems to catch better on the second attempt.
I drop the tank it wasn't to bad of a job and pulled the fuel pump assembly. I took 12V to the pump and drop it in the open tank with assembly pressure Reg. and top filter removed the pump ran good. Blew out the top filter and Reg. and got good gas flow through it also. I bought the replacement pressure Reg and filter $125 bucks!! So now the big question is do I go for the $280!!! complete fule pump set up? Replace the presure Reg.and filter assm. only or use the old cleaned out set up? The tank drop wasn't bad but doing twice sucks. Any advise Gator

Hmmm good question. I guess it all depends upon whether saving the additional $155 is worth the possibility of having to pull the tank again. I've always been the replace it all and not do it again type of guy. *If it were me, I would just replace all of it and be sure*.

* = I'm really good at spending other people's money for them!

As posted above. Why are you having to do this if it's still under warranty.

Hey Handi2 nice stang! Also how do you like the Jet stage 2? Dunner My local Dodge dealer who sucks doesn't stock the complete fuel assm. which tells me they are not replaceing to many.
My truck has 50k on it so the warranty has gone by by. I'm going to mess with the old filter regulator and see if it's possible to remove or bore out the filter portion and then put an inline filter post fuel Reg. Then in the future I won't have to drop a tank just because I got some garbage with my gas. If it works out I'll post the procedure. Thanks for the replies, Gator

I have not looked at one yet so take this with a grain a of salt. Will the pump funtion with out the regulator /filter in place? If so you can keep the stock pump in place and run an inline filter and pressure regulator. I have often unhooked power from stock pumps and ran inline high pressure pumps and inline fuel filter on super charged applications. The new inline pump pulled fuel through the old pump with no problem. Ever since I heard about the filter/regulator in-tank setup I have been thinking about just the situation you are experinceing! Worst cause you you keep the sender and run a house from were the pump would go down to the strainer. You then cut the OEM fuel line install fittings and flare the ends. Then install an inline fuel pump and filter. You could easily install an adjustable fuel regulator unger the hood close to the fuel rail feed.

Sandman, I thought of doing that very same thing. I figured the cost to be quite abit higher than oem? It may still may happen but for now I installed a new filter/Reg. and its starting normaly now. If you have any prices or brands of inline pumps that are reasonable let me know. Thanks Gator

Gator,
Thanks for the compliment. Good luck w/your fuel problem.
The Jet 2 works great w/the 4.7. Not a tire burner but I can tell the difference when I remove it and then replace it just to be sure it's not just the idea of it being there.

Anyone know if a mustang type pump will work in a dakota? I have put one in another ford product, but I don't know what the Dodge assembly looks like. Thanks.

Gator,

I do not know all of the specifics of your problem but does it only crank excessively some of the time? The reason I ask is because I used to have a '90 Caravan and I had problems similar to yours and even consulted a mechanic. I was ready to pull the tank and replace the pump but by using a scan tool I found that the cam shaft position sensor was going in and out causing the excessive cranking, Long story short, replaced the sensor and it started right up everytime after that.

Hope this helps.

Where are you people getting just the filter/regulator. Mine is a 98 CC 5.2, and the dealer said they only sell the pump/reg/filter as a unit ($449). So I went to NAPA and $179 later, I have the new pump....wondering about that filter and reg. though. 150,000 miles so far.

Thanks,
Ken

We have a fleet of Dodge pickups at my shop, and are experiencing fuel problems on several right now. Granted, these are the Rams with 5.2L engines, but they don't have "real" fuel filters either. We are just debating if we need to replace both the pump and regulator/filter assys. I can't understand why Dodge decided against putting "real" filters in. I have a '03 Dakota, and it is worrying me that I will have the same problems down the road...
One problem I can possibly see with adding an external, inline fuel pump and filter setup would be that it is still going to be pulling fuel through the in-tank pump and filter assy. Once that plugs up, you still need to replace the in-tank pump. (I think?)

We have a 2001 Dodge Dakota pick-up with a 4.7 V-8 engine that has 66,000 miles on it and all of a sudden it starting acting like we had gotten some bad fuel and we thought that until they starting getting to replacing the converters which this trucks has 3 at a cost of 680.00 factory only and the injectors 8 at 80.00 each but the problem wasn't bad gas it was the fuel rail. It just decinergated and it cost 380.00 and is on back-ordered and they don't know when they will get them in. What a head-ache. They are having problems with the fuel rail but no re-call. Thought I would let you know incase someone else was having this problem.

I have a question or 2 here > I have a 99 4x4 with no pump problems yet > I see above your stating there is a PRESURE REGULATOR in the tank > Presure indicates to me the pump is pushing fuel to the regulator and it is controling the presure > If so, how are you getting that same regulator to control presure with the pump pulling through it
> there would be no presure againt the reg valving system to control with and the pump would pump as fast as posible without restriction > Am I missing something here >
