At 172K miles, it's going to be a money pit.

I have a 1992 318, currently has 185k miles. Still running strong. Things that you will need to look at on a truck this old and with those kind of miles:

Front end - ball joints, upper and lower control arm bushings, sway bar links and bushings, tie rod ends.

Radiator - if it is still original it will need to be replaced shortly - look at the top of the radiator. The top casing on the OEM radiator is made of plastic, and will crack near the neck. Hoses and belts may need to be replaced if not done so by the previous owner.

Engine - check the intake manifold for oil on the inside. If present it has a blown belly gasket and will need to be replaced. It will blow eventually, they all do.

Rear differential will probably need fresh fluid. If it is an LSD and stock, the clutches are probably worn out as well.

These engines are close to bulletproof, and will last a long time if properly maintained.

It's going to be a money pit like .bob said. If you have the skills to fix the truck yourself, it might not be a bad fix-er-upper. If you don't know anything about working on vehicles and need to take it to a mechanic and body shop for repairs, pass on this one. It will run you into the poor house.

Another way to look at it, you could spend $350 for the truck, another $350 to get the parts to fix it up and beat it to death.

Those years (Gen 2's) also tend to have a problem with the computer wiring harness corroding from water dripping in the engine bay, causing some of these engines to just die on the road. Not a difficult fix, but hard to find. Usually don't find it until you pull off the wiring insulation.
