Subject: What oil do you use?

Message:
Time for another oil thread....

What kind of Dakota and what motor?

What brand/weight of oil do you use?

How often do you change it?

Why and how do you like it?

Mobile 1 5W-30. I change the filter only every 5,000 miles, and top of the crank case.

Care to guess? ; - )

Amsoil 100% TRUE Synthetic SAE 5w-30 Motor Oil.

As most of you know, I live in Manhattan (NYC), so I only drive approximately 12k miles per year, but lots of stop and start city driving, and lots of idling in traffic (a.k.a. "severe service").

So I must ask myself,

"Self, how many hours are on the oil, not just how many miles?

I figure enough hours each year to drive at least three to four times as many miles showing on the odometer, ... if I were on the open highway.

Therefore I change my oil twice per year, every 6k miles.

If I were using conventional crude (dino) motor oil, or anything less than a 100% TRUE Synthetic Motor Oil, then I would change every 2k - 3k miles ... due to the fact I consider my driving conditions to constitute "severe service".

I use whatever is on sale at Wal-Mart in the 5W30 variety (got 12 qt case of Valvoline for $16.50 yesterday).

I use NAPA Gold filters.

I change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles.

Beck - word of advice, dump the Fram filter. They are junk...I don't want to knock your preference, but having done the research I can speak from experience. They are trash. A Supertech has better guts then a Fram. But Fram has succeeded in winning everyone with their pretty colors and fancy grip. Also...there is no Mobil 1 in a 10w40.

thank-you for catching my typo, 10-30. is what I meant, supertech ,? I was under the impression that was a cheap filter with little or no filter properties.

Compare that against RedLine, Royal Purple, etc.

IMHO ... We are not overpriced.

Hey Jag, have you personally had a Fram fail on you? If so, how long was it on for? Please describe the failure the Fram had, I'm interested. I've used them for nearly 10 years w/ no problems, but then again I only leave it on for 3 months or 3,000 miles and time for an oil change. Not trying to rip on ya, but what do you have against the Fram, remember, personal experience, not what you have heard or read. Your input is appreciated!!

Oh yeah, I use the Fram PH-16 filter on my 1991 3.9 Dakota and 2000 Cherokee Sport 4.0 liter. Oil of choice is Quaker State 10W30 in the Jeep and Castrol GTX 10W30 in the truck. Both changed every 3,000 miles. I have had vehicles go in excess of 200,000 miles with the above mentined oils and filter, but I really feel the key was the 3,000 mile change interval, not necessarily the brand.

Mobil 1 - 10-30 buy it at wally world in 5qt jugs,(yes, I know the 4.7 takes 6 qts)

Change oil and filter ~ 5-7,000 miles

I've read some good filter studys, posted on a thread here, and I now use the wally world brand, I think it's called Super Tech,

or,

a Wix filter.

I've NEVER had ANY, 'milkshake', sludge, etc.

FRAM, Yes...I have personally seen a FRAM fail due to a faulty bypass valve. I oversee over a 1000 services a year. FRAM isn't the best...Let's not even talk about the internal paper cartridge they call a filter. You are lucky if that FRAM isn't clogged by 3k miles. You wouldn't notice the difference, the bypass valve (cheap rubber in the FRAM) opens up and you have a straight flow with no filtration. That's nice to know isn't? Frams are short-lived filters. Maybe the Extra-tough™(?) is better...but from what I have seen FRAM is nothing more then a well marketed poor filter
