Subject: Which Magnaflow?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, have an 01' 4.7 QC and I want to put dual outs on it that exit out the side behind both rear wheels.

I think by reading as many posts on exhausts as I can that I want to go with magnaflow. I want an exhaust with just a slightly lower note at idle and a little louder/lower at WOT - no resonation.

I have been to the magnoflow site and after doing some investigation have some questions. Is it worth the $25-$35 extra for the stainless over the aluminized? Is there much difference is life or just mostly looks?

Okay, my next question is size? My choices are the 12218/14218 which is 14" long with 2.5" inlet and outlets; the 12258/14258 which is 18" long with 2.5" inlet and 2.25 outlets and the 12580/14580 which is 22" long with 2.5" inlet and 2.25" outlets. The first two sets are 5"x8" oval and the last set is 5"x11" oval. To clear it up, the diffence in the first 2 digits is: 12--- is for aluminized and 14--- is for stainless.

I guess the main question is how much difference in the size of these will it make on the dB level? The stock muffler on there now is 24" long so will the same size magnaflow be about the same in sound level, therefore, should I go with one that is slightly shorter such as the 12258/14258?

Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Hey Brent your in luck, I can answer all your questions. I drive a 2000 Dak 4.7 5spd 4X4 CC

First off, YES go stainless steel if you plan to keep your truck, that's what I did.

As for the size of the muffler I have the 18" Magnaflow muffler inlet 2.5" dual, outlets 2.25" 5X8 oval which is the 14258.

If your looking more for a stock sounding muffler go with the 24" muffler. If you want a nice and deep rumble that can be heard without the noise inside the cab go with the 18" like I did. You'll love it. I did the whole system out of stainless steel the tips I used were Magnaflow SS tips 2.5" in 3" out, 18" long.

And to top this off I have the exact same exiting setup that you want. Here's a pic. copy and paste to a link

Those duals look quite nice... Any reason why you'd not run them straight out the back?

I'm going to have the exhaust done on my 2004, 4.7 QC this week and thought tips straight out the back would look nice.

The reason why I didn't run the tips out the back is because every other truck you see has them like that. I wanted to be different!!

Exactly, I have the very same approach with mods to my truck and is why I wanted to run the duals that way as well.

Is the 14258 a lot louder than stock? I want a deeper tone and to notice when I put my foot into it. For everyday driving though I don't want it to be annoying loud. I was leaning toward the 14258 with some ss tips. If you don't mind my asking what did your setup cost you?

Thanks again.

I'd be interested in knowing what people pay for a cat-back dual exhaust. I want to have a point of comparison when I get quotes.

Thanks

Just to tell you guys I'm from Toronto, Canada so the price is in Canadian dollars.

I got my Magnaflow tips and muffler from the nephew of Magnaflow, so that was very cheap. For the custom installation with SS pipes and all SS welds & hangers costed me $600

The whole system cost me less than buying a name brand dual exhaust cat-back kit.

I've got a single in/single out 18" magnaflow on mine...stock pipes. I went for the budget sound, and I didn't want to hurt torque, so the stock pipes stayed. My 18" is not as loud as I thought it would be. It has a -little- resonance at 1900rpms, but not loud at all...you just hear it better. Inside the cab when I stomp it, you actually can't hear much, but if you're under a bridge or something it sounds really good. It's not a "hey, look at me" sound, but it does have a nice, deep, V8 rumble, and is real racy at high rpms. Sometimes I wish I got the 14", but it's nice to just be able to hear it on the highway.

I got the aluminized and have no rust at all (2 years)...also, this muffler will "break in" and get a little louder after 6 months or so.
