Subject: 99 R/T Not shifting out of 1st

I have a 1999 Dakota R/T with 55,000 miles. I bought it from a private owner, so no warranty. Yesterday it stopped shifting out of first until about 5500RPM just driving normally. Then it would skip around and then go, not sure if it was 2nd or 3rd. I took it to the dealer and they told me I needed a)A reman. tranny for about $4,000 or b)A rebuild for $2,000.

I have heard of this as a common problem, but never really paid attention. What should I do? I read it could be some solenoids or a sensor, but I'm not sure. I don' really have two grand either, and I don't want to get screwed over. Thanks a lot guys.

I also have a 99 R/T, with the same problem... its the TV cable adjustment. fiddled with mine now it shifts great! I kinda cool too, because you can adjust exactly when you want it to shift. Now mines shifts @ 5100, just before the rev limiter. :)

If the tranny started doing that all at once, most likely either A) a sensor has gone in the the tranny (and you are in limp home mode), or B) the 2nd gear band/drum is shot from a shift kick/and or drag racing... been there done that with both.

I can get you a built tranny for a little over $2k-- with a warranty. Spend a few $$$ and have a shop give it a look-see-- most likely you are skipping 2nd and going into drive-- that will eventually take out the front clutch pack (again, been there done that).

The mechanic just told me that the ATF isn't red, but a dark color so that tells him something is cooked.
I don't race; what do you mean by shift kick?

v8performance.com, has directions on the tips and tricks section of the website, its a little confusing, but just look for the cable thats not the throttle cable, but is also attached to the throttle body, remove the little clip, and slide the tv cable a little forward(twards the radiator) and put the clip back on. If you move it too much, then it will shift at like 4K...hehe, did that the first time. I just found an old road with no traffic and started and stoped about 5 times, adjusting the cable in and out, untill i got it just right.

Sorry, fat fingered it-- shift KIT.

Sound like you're about to open you wallet--- if the fluid isn't red, then yeah-- you've got some internal damage... clutch material, etc.

I went through 4 trannys on mine before I got the current config... and it has worked flawlessly. Whatever you do, don't buy a dealer rebuilt trans... Even the mopar reman'd stuff is crap as well (I had one die after 1800 miles, and NO I didn't drag race it or drive it hard-- my wife drove it for approx 30 days, and it blew up the mopar reman'd converter they threw in there, and then contaminated the rest of the trans-- dealership wouldn't honor the warranty either).

Oh well, let us know what happens.

Torque converter went and plugged the filters, therefore heating it all up and burning up the clutch.
$1350 done at a local tranny shop.
