Subject: 4.7 plug change

Message:
I've read through the volumes of posts on this board pertaining to spark plugs on a 4.7 (most from the infamous Harlow Wilcox). I picked up some AP 5224's from my local aouto part store. I then proceeded to call the dealership where I purchased my 02 quad and asked them if there were any problems using the platinum AP 5224 plugs. He told me "Son, you don't put Autolites in a Dodge, use only Champions because that's what the engine was designed for". So I guess my question is this, has anybody used the AP 5224's and if so did you have any problems with them.

The 4.7 engine is a pretty high compression motor. Platinums may cause more detonation because they are a "hoter" plug, thereby eliminating any peformance gains by using them. But i don't know.... I use the Iridium plugs (CHA-CHING).. because of my S/Cer.... they (kenne bell) advised not to use platinums for that reason. But i am running VERY high compression... its up to you.....

I put these 5224 plugs in about 1000 miles ago and noticed pinging just off idle under load. The plugs were a replacment for the original champions that never pinged for 50000 miles.

If you don't mind, the NGK 2262's are a very nice plug for the money, but you will have to look them up for the 5.9, because they don't offer a p/n for the 4.7

I have the stock Autolites in mine and they work fine. Just because Champion gives DC the best deal on plugs doesn't mean that any engine is designed for them.

its pretty easy to change the plugs. you need a pretty long extension (for the plugs), and a 10mm deep well (regular 10mm will probably work) socket for the coil pak bolts... i found it easier to change plug#7, if i unbolted the purge solonoid from the driver's side firewall (leave the lines hooked up and set it off to one side) other than that, it was about the easiest plug change i have ever done.
the rearmost plug on the passenger side, needs a slightly shorter extension (about 6", the other one i used for all the others was a 12")

just dont forget to plug in all the coil pak plugs LOL!! i did that a few weeks ago. i was all finished with the install, and started her up. it ran fine, but the check engine light came on an about 4 seconds! i checked under the hood, and i forgot to plug #7's coil pak plug back in :-P so i had to write down my stereo settings, and reset the computer LOL! it gave code po357 (ignition coil 7 primary circuit malfunction)

i used autolite 5224 plugs, and it runs great. no pinging on regular unleaded, and a smoother idle!

Thanks for all the responses, looks like I'll take the platinums back.
