I've been running my 4.7 for quite a while with only the elctric fan operating near t-stat temp.
So far it's been ok even towing here in Phoenix.
But earlier this afternoon we found this place we checked out to go ride our quads. So we kicked my truck into 4LO and went romping up some rough a$$ hills.
After 15 min or so of this I noticed my temp near the TOP of the safe range just before the H area.
That's the HOTTEST I've ever seen my Dak.
So we put it back in 2HI and went back to the highway where it dropped right back to normal.
I guess the electic only may not be enough when doing some serious off road romping?
Come to think of it. My truck was doing no more than 5MPH and running over 4K RPM's up these steep rocky hills.

I don't really want to put the clutch fan back on so I may just have to add a second electric fan and stage it for a higher temp for when I'm romping in the offroad.

Um, if you were going only 5mph, why did you need to scream the motor at 4000 in low range? Does your truck have heavy duty cooling? I'll assume yes.

Greetings.
This is something I've been wondering about myself. I have a 99' 5.2 ext. cab that seems to be running hotter each year. I tried to run with an electric fan instead of the clutch-fan earlier this year with no luck. ( It was a black Max, puller electric)
The cooling system has been maintained regularly and there dosen't seem to be any "yuck" in the water passages. I changed out the water pump and fan clutch with no noticeable change in heating-up characteristics.
If anyone has any information on this "degradation" over time I would really like to hear about it.
I would also like to know if anyone else has changed out the fan clutch on their 5.2. When I did mine I found that there seems to be too much interference in the threading of the clutch nut to the water pump threads. I have seen this with two water pumps and clutches.
Next I'll ask about vibration! But not today.
Thanks,
Eric

Eric, Maybe the internals of your cooling system are getting plugged up or covered with a film. Using a GOOD flush may help. Kind of like clogged arteries.

Anyway. My truck runs fine. But only going 5 MPH up and down the hills without much airflow sure heated it up. Mind you it wasn't OVERHEATED. It just went to the top of the SAFE range. The highest it's ever went.
It wasn't at a continuous 4k, but it was going up there really quick, which is easy in 4LO.

If I plan on doing something that serious again I'll throw on my clutch fan. i also got an extra electric. I'm thinking of installing it as a suppliment and making a new electronic control that would stage them according to temp.
It would be cool.

Oh. And it does have the heavy duty cooling.

Man Im having the same problem. My 4.7 Dak never ran over 195 200, all of a suden bam! running hot. turns out that it's the radiator, I am told by the local dealer that the problem is with the coolant and the aluminum having a reaction and over time oxidizing and flaking off, slowly cloging the radiator. take it to a radiator shop and have them do a check with a heat probe. You will probably find that the top is hotter then the bottom and the outlet is hotter then anything else. if thats the case replace :) good luck.
PS if you buy the factory radiator make sure you get the one for the towing package "max cool" is how its written up in the computer mine cost $287
and 5 hrs to replace mabe, better to have the dealer do it 3.8hrs book time.

Wait. I think you guys are looking too far into what I am saying.

There is NOTHING wrong with my truck. Yet.

I have the fan clutch REMOVED. HAs been since last fall. I even tow with it off. It is getting over 100 degrees these days so I will keep watch.

When I was screwing around romping in 4LO, it got to the top of the SAFE range. It didn't over heat and it cooled right down when I put it back on 2HI and got back on the main road.

Oh yeah. I already ran a 180, and then even a 160 t-stat to experiment. I've got the 195 back in there. Didn't lose any power. But it's been since the winter time since I put it back in. Maybe I'll throw in the 180 again just for sh*ts and giggles. But even with a 180, running in 4LO would have done the same thing.
I just didn't have enough air with only the electric and going up and down the hills over and over ranging from idle to redline.

The truck is awesome.
I'll try to get a short video of where I was.

Has anyone used 'Redline Water Wetter' in their cooling system? It's an additive that's suppose to make the water in your cooling system more effective by breaking the water tension of the water in the cooling system and preventing hot spots from forming in your engine by keeping bubbles from forming around the hotter areas like the combustion chamber. These bubbles form near the boiling point and form a "vapor barrier" preventing the coolant from tranferring or carrying the heat away from these spots which makes these areas even hotter.

OK. Here's PART 2 to this story.

Today I went up near Payson Arizona and took the family off road.

We were way up in the mountains and after not long at all while driving slow, even in 2WD the truck got HOT. We were at 5000 altitude, NOT in Phoenix!

I grabbed the camera, which was already out, and took this quick pic. The temp was at H and the "check gauges" light was on!

Well. I'd been running ONLY the electric fan with the clutch fan removed. So far I have never had ANY problems, even when towing. Until it got over 100 degrees here and when I go off road driving SLOW the temp jumps up.

So. I remembered how it got HOT a few weeks ago and grabbed my clutch fan from my garage and put it in my truck box. When I pulled over here I threw it on real quick. Started it up and the temp went right down within a min or two and never got over 1/2 while continuing to romp off road!

Basically I will have to probably keep my clutch fan on for the summer here in Arizona just to not take any chances. I always liked running electric only on my last few cars, but none were going off road!
Maybe I'll shoe horn in two electrics some day and build a staged fan control.

Check it out. After I threw on the fan no problems with temp at all.
Here I got the right rear tire off of the ground going through these DEEP ruts in the washed out roads. With the 2 inch lift, using a good ol' torsion crank up front and blocks in the rear, my truck NEVER bottomed out like when it was stock!
Now I just need some better tires :-)

If you want a crazy e fan, go to a f4rd taurus SHO e fan 90-95. It pulls crazy air, it is a 16" with shroud. It has low or high just hook up whichever you want.

Just an FYI for you guys. Not to infer that this is the problem or anything.
When dealing with heat absorbtion, the most important consideration is humidity. "Specific Heat" is the term, and it refers to the mediums ability to hold ( or absorb) heat. The specific heat of air is .25 and water is 1.0, so using the old 1 BTU per pound of water to raise the temp 1 degree F, (the air absorbing heat while moving through the radiator), humidity has a huge influence. Dry air (30% relative humidity) can only absorb 1/4 the heat of saturated air (100% humidity). With that in mind, we need 4 times the amount of dry air to absorb the same BTU's as saturated air. The other influence is the act of evaporation and the pressure changes it causes. I won't go into a rant about the process, but lets just agree that when water evaporates, the point of evaporation is in a low pressure state, and water boils at a lower temp, the lower the pressure (which is why our cooling systems are pressurized, to raise the boiling point). So not only does the saturated air absorb more by virtue of its properties, but also by the act of evaporation. I now wonder how effective a water mister (even at current air temp) would be to help absorb some heat from the radiator. But you would have to have a pretty good size tank of water to lug around.. lol, maybe just pray for rain or lots of fog.....

I remember a LONG time ago when I was a kid working at a RV place doing mechanics these guys actually INSTALLED a mister to fog the radiator.
When the truck/motor home got HOT on long hills, you switched it on and the temp dropped silly.

Oh. I went out AGAIN last Sunday for a really long offroad romp with my friend. I even TOWED his truck up some big hills. Well. I left my clutch fan on and it never budged past 1/2 way.

The factory electric just doesn't cut it alone when going that slow in 4WD. I even have a controller that brings it on at the t-stat temp rather than at the factory set ~210° or whenever the A/C is on, etc.

Here's some of our weekend adventures...

My friend gets his Nissan stuck. The Desert Runner is 2WD.

So I pulled him up this rough road no problem and no overheating at all.
But I have to listen to the clutch fan when it engages.

Here's another I had to pull him up.

I talk him into going out there, but sometimes I got to help him get back out!

Graphitdak, the temp you are running at was not damaging YET. I have to caution you though. The 4.7L are not very forgiving after being overheated so be careful. The heads warp quite easily and once the do they drop valve seats and cam followers, stick valves and sprout large head gasket leaks. Usually, after an overheat chrysler says to toss the heads as they can not be reliably repaired. I just got done installing an engine in a ram that the driver overheated and it blew oil and coolant up into the intake manifold (almost half a gallon was laying in the intake) and at least a quart of oil was in the intake valley under the plenum. It also melted five pistons. Pretty bad deal for the owner, his service contract denied the claim. That was just stupidity on the owner's part but I have seen less severe overheats end up with new cyl. heads. I know you pay more attention than the average owner but just a word of caution anyways. Have fun with the hill climbin.

Thanks. I was not running the truck hard when it climbed temp. And when I threw on the clutch fan it came right down instantly!

The clutch fan looks like it will stay on for the rest of the summer here in Phoenix! It is close to 110 degrees these days!
