Subject: 26 gallons in a 24 gallon tank

I have a 04 QC 4.7/5 speed auto and on a recent trip I was able to get 26.713 gallons into the tank. My book states that I have a 24 gallon tank. This isn't the first time I was able to get more into the tank than 24 gallons. I went to Kingman AZ from Albuquerque NM on one tank of gas (465 miles) and when I got there I put 25 gallons or so in. When I was traveling east I stopped in Hinton OK coming from Albuquerque NM (487.5 miles) and thats were I was able to get 26.713 gallons of gas into the tank. Yes I'm filling up the tank till you can see the gas on top of the "splash gaurd" thing in the tube where the nozzle goes through, but how in the world am I able to get more than 24 gallons into a tank. I can understand the less than 24 gallons, but come on almost 27 gallons, the fill tube can't hold that much can it? Yes the light was on, and I pushed it, but the needle was just "even" with the "E" line on the gas gauge. I still don't understand how I that happened. I would be more suspicous if it only happened once, but this happened in two different states (AZ and OK). What are ya'lls thoughts on this matter?

It might be that the pumps are miscalibrated. With gas prices as high as they have been, there have been more instances of pump operators running miscalibrated pumps. Some states are already investigating gas stations, so it is possible that this is the cause.

I recently had a similar issue. I have a 22gallon tank and with 1/8th the gas light barely went on about 5mile before the gas station I was able to get 23 gallons. That was onlt till the auto shutoff from the pump not even topping off. proir to that I have never gotten more than 19 gallons in my tank even pushing it 50 miles after the gas light went off. I called bullsh!t on how much fuel I actually recieved from the pump. I called the Department of Weights and Measures right away with the info from the pump. I also told the guy who worked there they were ripping people off, and to get fvcked. Sounds like you and I both got ripped off. I'd call they will go and test the pumps.

JB,

Got to admit, those are some excellent MPG trips!

It is probably misclaibrated pumps also. But you did get those miles on ONE tank!

yep sure did get the miles in ONE tank. When I stopped in OK for gas, I was on my way to AR. I had my two kids, my mom, clothes for two weeks, a full size washer and dryer, bikes and toys for the kids. I put 53.43 dollars worth at 1.99 9/10 at the Shell Station. How do you plug in 9/10 into a calculator when the "tenth" position is already filled? Why do they have to have the 9/10 thing anyways, just make it a round number, what a pain. Wish I had kept the reciept now, cause I would call the OK weights and measures folks and ask them how that can happen. Seems like a bunch of BS to me.

what can happen if they find the pump to be inaccurate, do I get some money back, cause I can request a copy of the receipt and I remember which pump it was at the Shell Station?

Did you spill over? Did you top it off? If no, time to report that gas station for gouging. They are charging you for gas you didn't pump. Take your receipt and a copy of your window sticker that states your fuel capacity, and present that to who ever you report it to.

Now you guys have me worried. I'll have to fill up 100% next time and see what the pump says. Gas corporations can suck it. It's not enough they make it a choice between driving to work or eating, but they have to rip you off too. I wish I was smart enough to make a damn fusion-generator small enough for a vehicle.

All gas tanks have a 2-3 gallon reserve built into them that is not accounted for in the capacity rating. The factories do this to make the operators fuel the vehicle before the pump runs dry. All manufacturers do this-and have so for many, many years.

Lab Rat - you are correct but the reserve which you speak is included in the maximum fuel capacity statement. You will never fill up more than 20 gallons on a 22 gallon tank unless you run it close to dry. I have a 22 gallon tank, and my needle buries under the red with 6 gallons left in the tank, I usually drive 25 more miles after the light goes on and the needle is in the red, and I have never filled up more than 19 gallons. The tank capacity is accurate, the needle is set to bury itself so that you even if you push it after the indicator light comes on, you still will have a little left.

Now there is one true way of telling how much fuel you really can hold, Top off your tank, overflow a tad so that youre sure. Then drive to the safest location, and drain your tank and count the gallons. As impractical as this is, its the only real way of telling.

...or when the light comes on, or sometime shortly after, put a gallon or two of gas in a can in the bed and run the truck until it's dry. Add the contents of the gas can and then go fill up...

Hey, you know my over head puter I installed, different thread, anyway.

The DTE = distance to empty, said 0 miles,
as if I should have run out, but I still didn't get in 24 gallons, I have a QC, with the published 24 gallon tank.

The next time you fill up your lawn mower gas container, fill the container by the "pump" gauge. 2 gallons, etc. (depending on the size of the container). See if the fuel lines up with the mark on the container.
