In my 99 5.2L the oil pressure gauge reads 40 at idle and when driving it's close to about 100 or so. is this normal?

perfectly normal. 40 or slightly below at idle 100 or so while driving down the road. low pressure on idle due to rpms staying idle around 600 rpm

Too much pressure. Your engine doesn't need that much pressure to float the crank. Modern engines really only need about 40-50psi for solid protection.

The engine has to work pretty hard to maintain that high of a pressure, too. That causes drag, loss of hp, and early failure. The oil pump is driven off the end of the distributor, which is driven by the cam shaft, which is driven by the yada yada yada - you know how it works. The power is supplied from the crank shaft snout, and eventually ends up at the oil pump. If it's working too hard, everything in between the crank and pump will wear out early.

What oil are you using? I use 5W-30 in my 5.9. After 50,000 miles oil pressure is right where it should be when hot.

i have always used 5w30 for a 4.7L. 10w30 will damage the motor is what the owner manual says. There was 20000 miles on the dakota when i purchased it. Ever since i have had it the oil pressure at idle is probably about 37. Driving down the road it always has kicked up between 75 to 90. It is a distributorless system though. coil packs at spark plugs.

Can't speak intelligently about the 4.7; don't own one. But most push rod V engines just don't need 80-100 psi. If it's that high, you're expending too much energy moving the oil around. Nextel Cup and Busch teams are experimenting with 0 and 5 weight oil to free up hp.

The rule of thumb is 10psi per 1,000 rpm's. That's just a generally accepted guideline, and not carved in stone. Most stock oil pumps have a pressure relief valve to keep the pressure at a reasonable level - say 40-50 psi. Although I'm not convinced they work all that well.

Use whatever oil weight you need to get you down (or up) to that pressure in your particular vehicle in your particular operating environment.

100 psi sounds pretty high to me. My 95 Ram
has 40 psi at idle and about 50 -60 while
under load when hot.

Boy, that's a loaded question. Personally, I prefer Mobile 1 with an extended drain interval. Some folks don't.

Do a little research on this site (and darn near any other motorhead site) and you'll find an incredible amount of information, and even more opinions. It's mind boggeling.

sicminds,

Whatever brand of oil you choose make certain that is is a TRUE SYNTHETIC. Not a blend and NOT hydrocracked synthetic - which is regular conventional crude oil (dino) that has been further refined.
